Jet Greaves earned his spot as a full-time NHLer with an exceptional finish to last season, and is back with the Columbus Blue Jackets this year, which gave us the opportunity to catch up with the insightful 24-year-old during a recent visit to Vancouver for a quick video session.
Greaves quickly became a Pro Reads favourite after breaking down a memorable NHL debut against his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs two summers ago and doesn’t disappoint this time.

THE SEQUENCE

In this clip Greaves is facing the New Jersey Devils earlier this season and what starts as an even-man rush at the Columbus blue line, but in the NHL things can change fast:

Greaves Pro Reads 7 Screencap 1
What information are you looking for as this play hits the blue line in the freeze frame above?
Who is the most dangerous player on the ice at this point as the play gets into the zone?
What do you make of Greaves positioning given all you can see at this point? Don’t be shy to critique; Greaves happily points out what he’d like to do different too.
“It’s kind of like every clip, there’s some good and some that could be a lot better,” he said.

THE SAVE

Ask yourself the same questions as you watch the replay:

Seeing how that play looked at the blue line, and how quickly it changes, does Greaves initial depth make a little more sense? Would you have taken more ice initially? Or when the pass is made? Can you see any benefit to his depth? Does the handedness of the shooter matter?
