Dylan Garand made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers in March and finished his first big league stint 2-0-1 with a .948 save percentage after that late-season call up.

Now, after also impressing the InGoal crowd with the offseason skating and edge work drills he shared this summer, Garand is back for his Pro Reads debut. Much like the first NHL stretch he analyzes, the 24-year-old did not disappoint with his insights.

THE SEQUENCE

In this first video breakdown, Garand is facing the Chicago Blackhawks 1-3-1 power play setup, and a scoring chance that starts below the goal line to his left:

Freeze frame of the Chicago Blackhawks 1-3-1 power play setup with the puck below the goal line to Dylan Garand's left

Looking at the freeze frame above, can you identify the biggest threat? Is it the puck holder, the player on the backdoor, the right boards or cutting into the slot?

What information matters the most about each of these options?

Walk through them in your head – or make notes – until you identify the threat.

With all that in mind, what do you think of Garand holding his feet at this point? Is there any reason he might want to be in a reverse-VH with the puck down low?

Depending on which threat you identified, how would you move to them?

THE SAVE

Watch the save and replay below with those same questions in mind:

Okay, now that you’ve seen it, some obvious follow up questions:

  1. Did you properly identify the most likely threat to receive that pass?
  2. Were you surprised that player made a second pass?
  3. Can you identify two keys that allowed Garand to make that save? We’ll even give you a hint: One was on the first pass into the slot.
