Dustin Wolf is one of the best young goalies in the game and an informative delight in these video breakdowns, so InGoal is going back to the Calgary Flames star for the sixth time in the past two and a half months for another Pro Reads as we mix in his last season video session with some new goalie guests for 2026-27. It’s the fourth straight entry from Wolf dealing with plays from behind the net, and we’ve got a bonus second sequence that he breaks down dealing with the subject this time.

THE SEQUENCE

In each of his past three Pro Reads entries, Wolf talked about adjusting how soon he committed to his knees and a reverse-VH with the puck behind the net. It’s worth reviewing before those videos (the first one is here, second is here, and third one is here) before looking at another two plays against the Winnipeg Jets.

Rather than using freeze frames, let’s go straight to the saves but keeping in mind that concept of when to commit down into the post versus holding your feet. As you watch these two saves, ask yourself which choice you would have made, and perhaps more importantly, when and why you’d make that choice:

THE SAVES

Was there any other threat on the first save that might have warranted a different approach? With Wolf still regaining his feet on the pass out, do you think this is a situation he would have preferred to hold his feet or not?

What did you make of the brief blocker extension to cut off the pass?

Similarly, is this a situation you might handle differently? What is the risk of the attempt to cut off the pass in this one? Do you think it was worth it?

Once that pass gets past Wolf’s stick, what allows him to make the save?

THE PRO READ

Now let’s hear from Wolf and get his thoughts on how he managed both plays:
