Devin Cooley was an immediate fan favourite here at Pro Reads after debuting with open and candid insights into both the evolution of his game and how he reads it during a late-season stint with the San Jose Sharks. He’s since signed with the Calgary Flames and is playing with the AHL affiliate, where he was an AHL Star for the first time, but we don’t want to lose any of the insights from the late-blooming 27-year-old so we’re going back into our hour-long video session for another session.

THE SEQUENCE

This time Cooley is facing the St. Louis Blues and an overtime 4-on-3 power play featuring one of the League’s best passers in Robert Thomas, which he had to successfully kill off before getting his first NHL win that night:

Cooley Pro read 7 Screencap 1
Looking at the freeze frame above, can you identify the most likely options and why one might be more of less dangerous, or likely? What factors matter most?
What do you make of Cooley’s relaxed, upright stance at this point?
What side of the screen would you be holding at this point? Why?

THE SAVE

Now watch the save and a replay and ask yourself the same questions?

What did you notice about the way Cooley managed the screens, and how they changed as that play unfolded? Can you identify why he stays on the left of the screen when the play is up top, but shifts to the right — or short side — once a pass is made to the flank? What do you think of the way he shifts back to the middle?
What did you notice about his stance throughout?
