Garret Sparks made history in his NHL debut — recording a shutout, a feat achieved by only 26 goaltenders in league history at the time, and making him the third most recent to do so. He was also the third Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender ever to accomplish it.
Born in Elmhurst, Illinois, Sparks was selected by the Maple Leafs in the seventh round, 9th pick of that round, 190th overall, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Standing 6'3" and weighing 220 pounds, the left-catching American goaltender went on to appear in 40 NHL games, posting a record of 15 wins, 18 losses, and 2 overtime losses, with a 3.05 goals-against average, a .899 save percentage, and 2 shutouts.
