Born in Moscow on December 30, 1995, Igor Shesterkin was selected by the New York Rangers in the fourth round — 118th overall — of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. The pick came from deep in that draft class, but Shesterkin would spend years developing before making his NHL debut, arriving in New York for the 2019-20 season.
His introduction to the NHL was brief but striking. In 12 games during 2019-20, he posted a 10-2 record with a 2.52 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage. The following season, shortened by the pandemic, he appeared in 35 games, going 16-14 with a 2.62 GAA and a .916 save percentage, adding two shutouts.
The 2021-22 season brought Shesterkin his first full workload in the NHL and a Vezina Trophy — awarded annually to the league's best goaltender as voted by NHL general managers. In 53 games that year, he went 36-13 with a 2.07 goals-against average, a .935 save percentage, and six shutouts, numbers that formed the basis of his award campaign.
He carried that level of production into the following seasons. In 2022-23, Shesterkin appeared in 58 games, going 37-13 with a 2.48 GAA, a .916 save percentage, and three shutouts. The 2023-24 campaign saw him post a 36-17 record across 55 games, a 2.58 GAA, a .913 save percentage, and four shutouts. In 2024-25, his workload reached a career high of 61 games, finishing 27-29 with a 2.86 GAA, a .905 save percentage, and six shutouts.
Through the first 51 games of the 2025-26 season, Shesterkin holds a 25-19-6 record with a 2.50 GAA and a .912 save percentage. Across 325 career NHL regular-season games — all with the Rangers — he has accumulated 187 wins, 22 shutouts, a career 2.52 GAA, and a .917 save percentage. He wears number 31 and catches left.
