NHLShesterkin out for the season, Korpisalo for four more weeks

The Rangers announced on Saturday that Igor Shesterkin will miss the rest of the season with a lower-body injury, a day after his right skate jammed into the post as he hurried back into his crease in Washington. Joonas Korpisalo will be out four more weeks with a lower-body injury of his own, which leaves Dylan Garand, 24, as the Rangers’ only healthy NHL goalie for now. (NHL.com) Chris Johnston reported the announcement on X. (X)

Garand finished Friday’s 3-1 loss in Washington, making 11 saves on 12 shots after Shesterkin had stopped 13 of 14. He has made the most of his first NHL chances: five games, four of them starts, a 3-1-1 record, a 1.31 goals-against average, a .954 save percentage, and his first NHL shutout, 22 saves in Detroit on Oct. 2. After Friday’s game, captain J.T. Miller said the group has to “step up to a man to try to get the job done, especially (Garand).” (NHL.com)

Shesterkin was 3-1-0 in five starts this season with a 1.79 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage. (NHL.com)

AHLCallum Tung blanks Providence for his first AHL shutout

Rangers prospect Callum Tung stopped all 28 shots he faced in Providence on Friday, his first shutout in the AHL, as Hartford won 2-0 for its third straight win to open the season. Glenn Gawdin’s goal in the first period held up, with Tung making 12 saves in the second and seven more in the third. He is 2-0-0. (Wolf Pack)

With Shesterkin out, the Rangers need a second healthy goalie. Spencer Martin missed Friday’s game in Hartford with a lower-body injury but has been cleared to return, Rangers reporter Vince Z. Mercogliano reported, which puts him in line for the call-up. (Pro Hockey Rumors)

Tung, 22, is from Port Moody, B.C., and was never drafted. He turned pro with the Rangers out of UConn in April 2025 (UConn). Hartford is where Dylan Garand was playing until the Rangers called him up on Oct. 1. (Wolf Pack)

NHLTalbot becomes the first goalie to win for nine NHL franchises

No goalie in NHL history had won a game for nine different franchises until Cam Talbot did it on Friday, in his first game for Columbus. The Blue Jackets beat Pittsburgh 3-2 in a shootout, with Talbot making 20 saves through overtime and then denying all three Penguins shooters, Rickard Rakell, Egor Chinakhov, and Ben Kindel, while Kent Johnson scored the only goal of the shootout. (Blue Jackets)

Only three other goalies have won for as many as eight franchises: Sean Burke, Ron Tugnutt, and Curtis McElhinney. Burke played for nine NHL teams but only eight franchises, since he played for both Hartford and Carolina, the same franchise after the Whalers moved (Hockey-Reference). At 39 years and 96 days, Talbot also passed Fredrik Norrena as the oldest goalie with a win for Columbus. (Blue Jackets)

With Columbus outshooting Pittsburgh 45-22, Talbot saw only three shots in the first period, so staying sharp was half the job. “I just tried to keep focus, talk a lot, play the puck whenever I could, and just focus on whatever shots were coming my way,” he said. Coach Rick Bowness put it down to experience: “He knows how to keep himself in the game, right? He’s been around.” Talbot signed a one-year deal with the Blue Jackets on Sept. 14, after two seasons with the Red Wings. (Blue Jackets)

NHLMurashov makes 43 saves to earn the Penguins a point in Columbus

At the other end of Talbot’s debut, Sergei Murashov faced 45 shots and stopped 43, 23 of them in the second period alone. (NHL.com) Brandon Karafilis of the Penguins’ site picked out two: a blocker save on Matthew Knies and, even better, a stop on Zach Werenski with 18 seconds to go in overtime. “He was awesome. Just really steady and made some big saves for us,” Sidney Crosby said, and coach Dan Muse added: “He played really well. I mean, some huge saves. He did his part.” (Penguins)

Murashov gave the credit to the skaters who fought back from 2-0 down, and he had his own way of describing the extra time. Overtime, he said, “is always different,” with “a different vibration and different energy.” His approach, he said, was “just one shot at a time.” (Penguins)

Murashov is fast becoming one of our favorite interviews, and the clip below has more from him after the game. For how he spent his summer, from guitar lessons to a rock festival in Cleveland, see yesterday’s Goalie News.

InternationalLatvia's Mareks Mitens signs with KAC, Jonas Neffin's third shutout in four games for Berlin

EC-KAC, the Klagenfurt club in Austria’s ICE Hockey League, has signed Latvian national-team goalie Mareks Mitens, 28, to work alongside Florian Vorauer while Sebastian Dahm is out injured. Mitens had no club this season, and the deal runs to the November international break for now. “Our goaltending coach took a very close look at around 30 available goalies and analyzed them,” general manager Oliver Pilloni said (translated from German). (KAC)

Mitens left Latvia for the United States at 18 and played a season in the NAHL, then four years at Lake Superior State. He got into his first AHL game with the Binghamton Devils in April 2021 and split the next season between Utica and the ECHL’s Adirondack Thunderbirds. Since 2023 he has played in Europe, for Kladno in Czechia and then Spišská Nová Ves and Banská Bystrica in Slovakia. Latvia took him to the 2025 World Championship, and at this spring’s tournament he made his first appearance, against Finland, who went on to win it. (KAC) Latvian reporter Rems Ratņikovs also reported the signing. (X)
