Jorge Alves is the equipment manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, and the owner of one of the most unusual lines in NHL history. Born January 30, 1979, in Boston, Massachusetts, he served four years in the United States Marine Corps after high school, a stretch with no organized hockey at all, before attending North Carolina State University and working his way back into the game.

Alves joined the Hurricanes around 2003 as a part-time assistant equipment manager while still chasing a professional playing career. He got his foot in the door during an NHL lockout, when the club invited him to suit up and skate with the players who were still training at the practice rink, and he learned the equipment trade alongside longtime Carolina equipment manager Wally Tatomir. He pursued goaltending wherever it appeared, taking emergency-backup spots and free-agent-camp tryouts that led to brief minor-league stints with clubs such as the Charlotte Checkers and the Bloomington PrairieThunder, before joining the Hurricanes equipment staff full-time in 2012-13. For years he has also been Carolina's practice goaltender, skating with the team almost daily, a role he likens to a baseball bullpen catcher.

His NHL moment came on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2016, in Tampa Bay. Backup Eddie Lack had been ruled out that afternoon with concussion symptoms, and late in the third period, with the Hurricanes trailing and starter Cam Ward pulled, head coach Bill Peters told his equipment manager to get his gear on. Alves had signed an NHL contract that night with his finger on a team staffer's phone screen, then came around the corner to find a colleague had already made up a nameplate for his jersey. He played the final 7.6 seconds against the Lightning, the shortest game appearance in NHL history, breaking a mark of 43 seconds previously held by Jordan Sigalet, now the Calgary Flames' Director of Goaltending. Alves finished with a 0.00 goals-against average in his one and only NHL game.

Alves told the story in full on InGoal Radio, joining Kevin Woodley to talk about the debut, the life of an NHL equipment manager, and what it means to be the goaltender who keeps everyone else's gear ready.
