Martin Brodeur was born on May 6, 1972, in Montréal, Quebec, and went on to play 22 seasons as a goaltender in the NHL. Selected 20th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the 1990 NHL Draft, the left-catching netminder spent 21 of those seasons in New Jersey, building one of the most statistically documented careers in the history of the position.

Over 1,266 regular-season games, Brodeur posted 691 wins, 397 losses, and 49 overtime losses, with a career goals-against average of 2.24, a save percentage of .912, and 125 shutouts.
