NHLJarry shuts out the Flames for his 24th career shutout, Cooley leaves after a crease collision
Calgary put 24 shots on Tristan Jarry in Edmonton on Wednesday and none of them went in. The 4-0 win was his first shutout of the season, and Jarry gave the skaters the credit: “I think any time you can blank the board like that, it also gives credit to the team in front” (NHL.com). By InGoal’s count from the NHL’s career stats, it is the 24th shutout of his NHL career and his second for Edmonton; the other 22 came in Pittsburgh.
At the other end, Devin Cooley was hurt when Edmonton’s Colton Dach crashed into him in the crease with 12 seconds to go in the first period. Dach was called for goaltender interference. Cooley had stopped eight of nine shots, finished the period, and did not come out for the second; the Flames called it a lower-body injury. Dustin Wolf, who took over for the final 40 minutes and made 20 saves on 23 shots, said: “You don’t want to see anyone get hurt, let alone a guy that’s been playing some of his best hockey” (NHL.com). Cooley had started all four games of Calgary’s winning streak, which ended Wednesday, with a .955 save percentage across them, and coach Ryan Huska had no update after the game (theScore). The collision is in the clip below.

NHLBrodeur says elite goalies 'just want the net,' and Hellebuyck is no different
Why did New Jersey go out and get Connor Hellebuyck? Martin Brodeur, the Devils’ executive vice president of hockey operations, told NHL Network on Tuesday that it comes down to timing. With Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, and Timo Meier in their prime, he called this “the window of winning” and said “it was time for us to make a move like that.”
The franchise’s all-time wins leader also spoke about the kind of goalie Hellebuyck is. “I wanted to play every game,” Brodeur said. “I think that’s all the top goalies.” They “just want the net,” he said, and there is “no difference with Connor.” A goalie like that changes how both benches play, in his view: “You’re just a presence. I think even in the minds of the opponents, they know that they’re going to have to do their best to beat you, and your players just feed off of that.” And on a goalie learning a new defence corps: “Elite goalies are elite goalies. You could put them in any kind of situation and they’ll succeed” (NHL.com, Mike G. Morreale). Hellebuyck’s winning Devils debut in Dallas was in yesterday’s edition.

NHLThompson comes off injured reserve and beats the Flyers
Washington took Logan Thompson off injured reserve on Wednesday (Capitals.com) and had him in goal that night against Philadelphia. He stopped 23 of 25 shots in a 5-2 win, his first game since a loss to Los Angeles on Oct. 20, according to his NHL.com game log. Dylan Strome said that when the Capitals made mistakes, “‘LT’ was there for us” (NHL.com).

AHLMatt Murray stops all 37 for Milwaukee, Miner blanks Charlotte
Milwaukee’s Matt Murray (not the two-time Stanley Cup champion of the same name) faced 17 Manitoba shots in the first period alone on Wednesday and finished with 37 saves in a 3-0 win, the Admirals’ first shutout of the season. His biggest stop was on a Parker Ford breakaway midway through the third. He has won all four of his AHL games this season. “Murray played great,” coach Karl Taylor said. “He’s had a great start here, and he’s in a good spot at the start of this season” (Admirals; shots by period from the AHL game summary).
Murray, 28, is from St. Albert, Alberta, and was never drafted. He played for Spruce Grove in the AJHL and Fargo in the USHL, spent five seasons at UMass, and signed with Dallas as a free agent in 2022. He is now in the Nashville organization and has played one NHL game this season (NHL.com).
