Yaroslav Askarov was born in Omsk, Russia on June 16, 2002, and by the time the 2020 NHL Draft arrived, he had drawn enough attention to be selected 11th overall by the Nashville Predators — the first goaltender taken in that draft class. Standing 6'3" and catching right-handed, the Omsk native spent several seasons developing in the Predators organization before his NHL career began in earnest.
His first taste of NHL action came with Nashville. In 2022-23, Askarov appeared in a single game for the Predators, posting a 4.15 goals-against average and a .886 save percentage in a loss. The following season, 2023-24, he returned for two games and posted markedly different numbers — a 1.47 GAA and a .943 save percentage, going 1-0 in those appearances.
A significant organizational change came ahead of the 2024-25 season, when Askarov was traded to the San Jose Sharks. In 13 games with San Jose that season, he went 4-6 with a 3.10 GAA and a .896 save percentage.
The 2025-26 season has seen Askarov take on a far larger role with the Sharks. Through 47 games, he carries a record of 21-20-4 with a 3.63 GAA and a .884 save percentage — already his busiest NHL campaign and one that has pushed his career totals to 63 games played, 26 wins, 27 losses, 6 overtime losses, a career GAA of 3.48, and a career save percentage of .887 over 3,452 minutes and 47 seconds of NHL ice time.
