What an incredible afternoon, as Stanley Cup champion and Vezina Trophy winner Braden Holtby and his former goalie coach and long-time sports psychologist, John Stevenson, joined InGoal to talk goaltending and the mental game for almost an hour and 20 minutes on May 23, including a lengthy and informative question-and-answer session with our Premium Members at the end.
There are too many takeaways to list here, everything from the harm that playing too many video games can do to a young goalie, to how a self-described “farm kid from Saskatchewan” who thought mental toughness was toughing things out first bought into the value of truly focusing on his mental game, and several of the specific drills and exercises they’ve used over the years. This InGoal InPerson starts with your first loos at the Performance Wheel that Stevenson has developed and introduces at the beginning, and he and Holtby make their way through the five key elements that make it up, with stories and examples of each.
It really was a great day for goaltending, and we’ve already heard from several of the more than 200 goalies and coaches who took part asking when they can see it again, so we didn’t want to waste any time sharing it with the rest of you. Based on the early feedback, and the long list of lessons that came from it, we’re betting you’ll want to watch it more than once too.
