Ottawa Senators rookie Joey Daccord joined us this week to review video from this past season for Pro Reads, and anyone who listened to his great guest appearance on the InGoal Radio Podcast more than two years ago knows we’re in for some great goaltending insights.
With that in mind, we figured we’d dive right in with one of the toughest saves in hockey these days: head to head with a full-speed Connor McDavid coming in on a breakaway.
There’s really not much to break down here in terms of how this play starts: the NHL’s leading scorer and arguably world’s fastest player pounces on a turnover in the neutral zone and from there it’s a pretty safe bet that no one is catching him, though an attempt does play a role.
Taking a quick glance at this freeze frame, what do you make of Daccord’s depth as McDavid speeds in and hits the top hash mark? Is there anything else in the picture that might affect how you would manage this play, or what you might expect from McDavid?
