Hockey Canada Coaches Panel

by | 0 comments

The biggest benefit of InGoal Magazine being asked to moderate some panels at the 2021 Virtual Goaltending Coach Certification Seminar put on by Hockey Canada this summer was the fact it allowed us to share those presentations with our Premium Members.

We kicked things off with the Keynote Q+A featuring Roberto Luongo last week, an hour-long discussion of all things goaltending with the two-time Olympic gold medal winner and future Hall of Fame goalie. And this week we bring you an hour-long coaches panel featuring Dustin Schwartz, goalie coach for the Edmonton Oilers, Dan Stewart, who is coming off his first full season as the St. Louis Blues development goaltending coach, Joe Johnston, who has coached goalies with the National Women’s Teams and at Dalhousie University, and Andre Tourigny, who shortly after this session was named the new head coach of the Arizona Coyotes.

What’s that, you ask? A head coach in a goalie coach conference? We wondered the same thing going in, but Tourigny was an excellent addition to the panel, providing must-listen insights on how head coaches should treat their goalies and those coaching them that many of you may want to share with the head coach in your goalie’s life, and some great stories about his time as an assistant with the Patrick Roy-coached Colorado Avalanche and how they would tailor the focus of their penalty kill to the strength of the goalie starting that night. Add in a great discussion on the importance of puck handling, and some great thoughts from Stewart about why it’s too overlooked in youth hockey, and this is a can’t miss discussion:
