Scott Wedgewood played for three NHL teams in the 2021-2022 season. He was waived, claimed, traded, and somewhere in the middle of all that chaos he decided to work with a mental coach. The specific thought pattern he was trying to fix: team's up by a goal, misses a chance to extend the lead, and his brain immediately goes to the scenario where the opponent scores. Not catastrophizing exactly -- he called himself a realist -- but not helpful either. The mental coach didn't eliminate the thoughts. That is not how it works. He just helped Wedgewood understand what to do with them instead of letting them sit there and fester.
Fast forward to 2026: Wedgewood goes 6-1 in the first two rounds, gets pulled after one bad game, comes back and wins the overtime game that sends Colorado to the West Final. He's been in the NHL every season since he made that call in Arizona.

Ian Clark says angle is the only element of goaltending positioning that has standalone value. Depth means nothing without it. Body positioning means nothing without it.
That's the foundation of Episode 3 of The Last Line -- and it reshapes how you think about everything else that follows. Clark divides the net into six 2x2 sections and explains why low-middle is statistically the safest target for shooters, why desperation plays almost always return to middle net, and what Dominik Hasek understood about coverage that most goalies -- at any level -- still haven't figured out.

The mindset advice Frederik Andersen laid out in an early InGoal Radio Podcast Episode — perform when things aren't perfect, or you won't last — reads differently now that he's shutting out the Flyers in Game 1 at 36 years old after the worst statistical season of his long career: "Control what you can control and really don't worry about anything else. As a goalie, you're a reactive and defensive player. You don't get to dictate the game, really."
