Coach Theodore “Teddy” Monnich (pictured above, coaching) is a long-time friend of InGoal who has written for us to share his expertise with the goaltending community. Monnich is a retired goalie, goalie coach, sport psychology consultant, and mental skills coach for USA Hockey’s Goalie Nation.

He is also a doctoral (Ed.D.) candidate in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is researching the mental challenges faced by goalies in order to develop better resources for goalies to manage the mental challenges inherent in their game. Monnich is utilizing online surveys, along with follow-up focus groups and interviews, to ask goalies and goalie coaches about the mental challenges facing ice hockey goalies, and the mental skills to manage those challenges based on their experiences. Monnich’s scientific evidence-based practice approach enables accurate and focused data collection and results that eliminate guesswork. This can enable goalies to more effectively self-assess and manage the mental challenges of their game.

When we learned of the research and his need for (online) volunteers to help him complete his work, we wanted to help by sharing it with all our readers. If you’d be interested in taking a bit of time to help Ted in this important work, please reach out to him directly.

Participants must be at least 18 years old. Participants will take a brief online survey, and afterwards can volunteer to participate in an online focus group or interview. All data is kept anonymous and confidential per IRB guidelines (IRB = Institutional Review Board — the folks at the university who ensure everything is ethical, safe, protects your privacy etc).

Goalies or goalie coaches interested in participating in the study, and thus helping to further knowledge and understanding about the goalie’s mental game, should contact Theodore Monnich at [email protected]
