Eric Comrie returns for his second Pro Reads sessions, and as anyone who tuned in for his insightful video breakdown debut last month already knows, these will quickly become can’t miss for a goalie who has bounced around the NHL a lot over the past two seasons.

The clips all come from Comrie’s season debut with the New Jersey Devils on Jan 31, a game in which he stopped 30 of 33 for a 4-3 win shortly before being reclaimed off waivers for the third time in the past three seasons by the Winnipeg Jets. As Comrie showed in that game, he’s ready for the NHL, and you’ll understand why after seeing him analyze his own play again.

The Scenario

Comrie is facing a 3-on-2 rush as the Sabres gain the blue line with Jack Eichel carrying the puck down the right wing and Taylor Hall streaking down the opposite side.

What’s the first thing you look for as a goalie as this rush approaches through the neutral zone?

You can compare your answer to the one Comrie gives in his Pro Read below, but it becomes important as this play continues and becomes more of a 2-on-1, with Hall wide open:

In less than a second of real time, this play has changed completely. As Devils defenseman PK Subban cuts across to attack the new puck carrier, Victor Olofsson, in the middle, what factors become increasingly important? Who is now the most dangerous player on the ice?

 THE SAVE

Now let’s take a look at the entire play to see what ends up happening.

Key Takeaways
  • Comrie breaks down his save on a 3-on-2 rush against Buffalo, featuring Jack Eichel and Taylor Hall, from his January 31 start with the New Jersey Devils.
  • Identify the most dangerous player on a rush before the play develops — Comrie explains what he looks for as the rush enters through the neutral zone, and why that read matters when the play quickly converts to a 2-on-1.
  • When a defenseman commits to an attacker in the middle, the streaking weak-side forward (Hall) becomes the primary threat — Comrie's positioning and knee-slide technique reflect that read in real time.
