Canucks goalie Spencer Martin in butterfly position during double dump drill, with Curtis Sanford demonstrating technique ...

Pro Drills: Double Dumps

Key Takeaways
  • Curtis Sanford's Double Dumps drill combines screen management, depth management, and post-play into a single connected sequence.
  • Spencer Martin posted a .958 save percentage during his 2022-23 call-up with Vancouver after embracing significant technical and tactical changes.
  • Martin built his foundation with Pittsburgh Penguins goalie coach Andy Chiodo before refining depth management during two Stanley Cup-winning seasons with Tampa Bay.
  • The drill begins with a crease screener peeling off to retrieve a dumped puck, triggering a second dump to the opposite side to simulate realistic game chaos.
  • Stance and post-play adjustments made while Martin was fifth on the Canucks' depth chart ultimately contributed to NHL success, demonstrating the value of continuous development regardless of roster status.

When Spencer Martin posted his first career NHL win with the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, after going almost five years and two franchises between NHL starts, it was a testament to his work ethic and willingness to try new things in a constantly evolving position.

Martin talked a lot about that process on Episode 153 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, how he expanded on a strong technical foundation built over years with Pittsburgh Penguins goalie coach Andy Chiodo in the offseason, making tactical adjustments in depth management during two seasons (and two Stanley Cup rings) with the Tampa Bay Lightning and continuing to build with stance and post-play changes this season with the Canucks. That Martin embraced those changes even while starting his seventh professional season fifth on the Vancouver depth chart speaks volumes, and that work paid off with a 1-0-2 record and .958 save percentage during a recent call up after Thatcher Demko and Jaroslav Halak were both sidelined by COVID-19.

InGoal Magazine has been at the rink for a lot of that work when Martin was in the American Hockey League earlier this season, and is excited to share snippets, starting with this Pro Drills segment that includes elements of his evolving screen management and post-play.
