The audio segment published here takes you directly to the Parent Segment from this episode.
- Start building independence early — don't wait until your goalie leaves for academy or junior hockey to hand over responsibilities.
- Layer on age-appropriate responsibilities gradually so the transition to self-management feels natural, not overwhelming.
- Teaching your goalie to prepare and organize their own equipment and schedule benefits both the player and the busy parent.
- Independence training is a long-term investment: the habits built at home directly prepare goalies for life away from family support.
- Even with demanding schedules, parents can use small, consistent steps to shift ownership of preparation to their young goalie.
Whether they leave the nest to play at an Academy, for Junior Hockey, College or some other reason, eventually your young goalie will be on their own and have to be prepared and organized without your support. While with your busy schedule we know it’s not easy, in this week’s parent segment we offer a suggestion on how to help them become more independent from an early age, layering on the responsibilities as they get older – all while making your life easier in the end!
