Alex Lyon grew up playing with and against Charlie Lindgren in Minnesota, so it’s only fitting that his Pro Reads debut here at InGoal Magazine also follows a similar path.

Much like Charlie Lindgren did the week prior, Lyon sat down for both a fascinating feature interview that will appear soon on the InGoal Radio Podcast, as well as an extended video breakdown session. It’s going to be hard enough to wait to share Lyon’s podcast interview, so we couldn’t hold off on first Pro Reads from the Detroit Red Wings goalie.

THE SEQUENCE

Lyon’s Pro Reads debut comes from an in-zone 5-on-5 situation late in a tied game against the San Jose Sharks, and contains several different elements and great teaching points:

Alex Lyon sets in his crease as Sharks forwards attack with Detroit Red Wings defenders in pursuit during NHL action.

As we mentioned above, there’s already a lot of different elements Lyon breaks down before we even get to this point, but this is clearly a big part of the play, so what are you looking for here? What do you make of Lyon’s positioning at this point?

THE SAVE

To be fair, there are key elements not seen in the freeze frame because the camera was too tight on the bottom of the zone, so watch the entire sequence and ask the same questions:

In addition to reading that final pass — and how he reacted to both that pass and the shot itself — what else stood out to you about the sequence and how Lyon handled it? Go back to the beginning and look at how he handled the play behind the net and up the wall.

Does anything stand out?

Was there anything about the final shooter that indicated where he was shooting?

THE PRO READ

Now let’s hear from Lyon about all those elements in his detailed breakdown:

Key Takeaways
  • Detroit Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon breaks down his save on a late, tied 5-on-5 in-zone sequence against the San Jose Sharks.
  • Lyon identifies his unconventional 'janky spin move' behind the net as a deliberate read, not an accident — explaining it signals strong situational awareness rather than a default technique.
  • Lyon contrasts his choice with the more common reverse blocker-side move, showing how reading the full play behind the net shapes positioning and response before the shot even develops.
