The InGoal crew was so excited to share Charlie Lindgren’s first foray into the Pro Reads format that we couldn’t wait for his latest interview on the InGoal Radio Podcast.
Now that our latest interview with Lindgren is live on Episode 260, we don’t want to waste any time getting back to the Washington Capitals starter for another video session from our extensive sit down shortly after he got back from the World Championships.
THE SEQUENCE
After making his Pro Reads debut against a potent New York Rangers power play, this time Lindgren is facing some of their top players on a 3-on-2 rush chance through the neutral zone after the Capitals get caught on the long line change in the second period (there is actually a second part to this sequence that is equally valuable but we don’t want to give away all the answers to Part 1 so be sure to watch the entire play and Pro Read below):
As Artemi Panarin carries the puck into the offensive zone in the freeze frame above, what are you looking for about his passing options? How dangerous is Panarin himself?
Seeing all three options, what stands out to you as most dangerous in the photo above?
Now take a look at the second freeze frame below and ask yourself the same questions?
Has anything changed in terms of who is the most dangerous threat to score?
What, if anything can you read off Panarin as a shoot-or-pass option at this point?
And what do you make of Lindgren’s depth relative to the three options?
THE SAVE
Because it’s a rush chance, speed matters, and without wanting to give too many of the answers to the above questions away, it matters even more in this case. So, watch the save play out at full speed while keeping those same questions in mind:
Did you correctly identify the most dangerous threat before watching the full play?
When were you able to identify Vincent Trocheck going hard to the net on the far side as the most dangerous option? How early in the sequence did this become apparent and why?
Does Lindgren’s depth decision make sense seeing that 3-on-2 rush play out? Why?
What is it about his positioning that stands out the most?
Any thoughts on his recovery for the second shot? What did you like about his depth decision as the rebound was fed into the slot? What about the push across?
THE PRO READ
Now listen in as Lindgren explains how he read the initial rush and a tough second chance:
