
The brand new The Power Within III book is out, and InGoal Magazine has teamed up with co-authors Justin Goldman and Mike Valley to provide exclusive excerpts to our Premium Members.
As we heard from Valley in his recent appearance on the InGoal Radio Podcast, the new book is loaded with great lessons and anecdotes from a variety of elite goalies, goalie coaches and some who have done both, including this latest entry from Brian Elliott, who played 16 NHL seasons, including five with the St. Louis Blues, a team he now works for as a goalie scout and development coach.
Elliott, who was always insightful and open in discussing the evolution of his game and a career that began with the Ottawa Senators in 2008 as an underdog despite leading Wisconsin to the NCAA National Championship two years prior. Those first four seasons weren’t easy for Elliott, who also appeared in the original The Power Within book (blue cover), but instead of giving up, he found a way to overcome every challenge thrown his way while adapting his game to the NHL. His hard work and resilience paid off when an opportunity in St. Louis presented itself, leading to a breakout season and NHL All-Star Games in 2012 and 2015.
Elliott went on to have successful stints in Calgary, Philadelphia, and Tampa Bay, amassing 543 regular season games and 279 wins. Now as a development goalie coach for the Blues, his journey has shifted to mentoring and guiding the next generation of pro goaltenders. He reflected on some of the things he learned as an NHL goalie — and what he looks for now when evaluating those who aspire to be on — as part of his conversation with Valley for this latest edition:
