It’s been more than four years since we last connected with Eric Comrie for a Pro Reads video breakdown session back in 2021, but he was with the Winnipeg Jets at the time and he’s back there again, coming off a successful season that included a .914 save percentage and two shutouts in 20 games behind Connor Hellebuyck.

Comrie has appeared on the InGoal Radio Podcast since, but we wanted to get him back in this format because he’s so insightful and willing to share insights into how he – and Winnipeg goalie coach Wade Flaherty and Hellebuyck – look at the game, both in real time and when they’re doing video breakdown sessions like this.

THE SCENARIO

Comrie and the Jets are protecting a lead in the final minute early last season against the Calgary Flames and facing a 5-on-4 with Dustin Wolf pulled at the other end:

Comrie Pro Reads 8 Screencap 1

With Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar beating his check at the point and cutting downhill from the right point, who are the most dangerous passing options on the ice? What information should you already have gathered about them? How does that affect how you might come across the crease if he does pass?

What do you think of Comrie’s positioning behind the screen?

Anything you might do different here?

How are you coming across on each pass option?

THE SAVE

Now watch the save and replays below to see if the option you identified was the one that played out and if Comrie came across the same way you would have:

Did you pick the correct threat? Did Comrie move towards it the same way you would have? Can you see why he might have come across on his feet here?

What factors do you think go into that decision? Now let’s hear from Comrie as he shares his thoughts on how he played this:

Key Takeaways
  • Comrie breaks down his save during a 5-on-4 with the net empty in the final minute against Calgary, with MacKenzie Weegar cutting downhill from the right point as the primary threat.
  • Comrie stresses pre-read awareness: identifying which players are left- or right-handed before the pass comes determines how aggressively and in which direction you move across the crease.
  • Knowing one-timer locations in real time allows a goalie to prioritize threats and commit to crease movement with confidence rather than reacting after the puck has already moved.
