Brandon Bussi has been one of the best stories in the NHL this season, going from the Florida Panthers to the Carolina Hurricanes as a pre-season waiver claim, then setting records as the first goalie in NHL history to win 10 of his first 11 games, and the fastest to 20 career wins, (in just 24 games) before signing a three-year contract extension with the Canes. The 27-year-old is an even better person, a passionate student of the game and the perfect Pro Reads guest, so InGoal Magazine was thrilled to sit down with him recently for a video breakdown session.

THE SEQUENCE

Bussi is facing what looks like a possible breakaway in the neutral zone as his right defensemen change, but Jalen Chatfield (No. 5) does a nice job getting back into the play in time:

Looking at the freeze frame above, what are the biggest threats you need to consider as the goalie? Given that, what do you make of Bussi’s depth at this point?

Don’t worry about being picky. Bussi was: “This is a good learning experience for some good things how I played it and some things I would like to correct.”

Just one second later, a lot has changed. What are the primary threats at this point? And again, what do you make of Bussi’s position given how this play is developing?

The Save

Watch the save and replays below keeping those same questions in mind:

Seeing how it all played out, is there anything you might have done differently from a positioning perspective? At one point do you adjust? More important, why?

What did you make of the slide and save execution? Again, was there anything you would have done different? Remember, Bussi already said he would.

Key Takeaways
  • Brandon Bussi breaks down his save on a developing rush chance in the neutral zone, where a possible breakaway is neutralized by defenseman Jalen Chatfield recovering in time.
  • Bussi identifies his starting depth as a self-correction point, stating he was a full skate length or more above the crease with the puck already in the zone — aggressive positioning he links directly to his size.
  • Bussi describes the session as 'a good learning experience for some good things how I played it and some things I would like to correct,' framing elite-level self-analysis as a deliberate part of his development.
