Kevin Woodley sits down with Cam from The Hockey Shop to break down the new CCM Pro Spec goalie pants — the NHL-level pro pant at retail for the first time, what separates it from the XF Pro, how the NHL-style fit system works, and who should make the switch.
This segment will air as part of Episode 360 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, but with the pants available at retail today, we’re bringing it to you early.
- The CCM Pro Spec is the first time the actual NHL/CHL/NCAA pro pant — descendant of the HPG 12K and 14K — has been available at retail.
- Its five-barrel front is noticeably trimmer than the XF Pro's wide, flat barrel; goalies prioritizing maximum coverage should stick with the XF Pro.
- Protection is the primary design focus: thick internal padding throughout, plus cut-resistant material across the back of the legs where skate blades can catch.
- A hidden perimeter zipper adds approximately one inch of length for fine-tuned fit, and a removable internal belt (velcroed in) allows further adjustment.
- Sizing uses the NHL's numerical system — Fits 0 through 4 — with Fit 3 landing close to an XF Pro large.
Goalies have chased the “ghost pant” for years — the pro-stock CCM pant worn in the NHL, CHL and NCAA, the direct lineage of the legendary HPG 12K and 14K. The Pro Spec brings that pant to retail for the first time.
The five-barrel front
The front of the pant uses the NHL-legal rounded, tapered five-barrel design — noticeably trimmer than the wide, flat barrel on the XF Pro. If maximum coverage is your priority, the XF Pro is still the pick; the Pro Spec is for goalies who want the pro fit and profile.
Pro-level protection
This pant isn’t chasing weight — it’s chasing protection. The internal padding is thick, pro-level protection throughout, and cut-resistant material runs across the back of the legs for the places where skates can catch you in the crease.
Fit system
A removable internal belt is velcroed in — a feature the pros aren’t allowed to have in the NHL — and a hidden zipper around the perimeter of the pant adds about an inch of length to dial in your fit.
Sizing
Sizing follows the NHL’s numerical system: five fits, 0 through 4, with Fit 3 landing roughly at an XF Pro large. Questions on sizing or fit? The goalie experts at The Hockey Shop Source for Sports can walk you through it.
Who it’s for
Goalies who want the actual pant the pros wear — the trimmer NHL-legal front, a protection-first build, and a fit system you can fine-tune — rather than the widest possible coverage.
