Dylan Garand’s Carey Price-Inspired Key to Crease Movement
Dylan Garand’s six-part summer skating series was loaded with great drills and takeaways, but one was more subtle, despite being inspired by soon-to-be Hall of Famer Carey Price.
It stood out in person perhaps even more than on video, and was something Garand’s long-time goalie coach Dan De Palma noted has long been a staple of all his training sessions.
So, what is it?
In the simplest of terms, Garand doesn’t cheat.
Same idea: don’t cheat. Dropping square will make it easier in a game.
What does that mean in a series of skating drills without shots? It’s basically Garand being sure to square up and set on each of the pucks he uses as targets for his movements. It may seem like a small thing, but right up to the NHL you often see goalies give into the temptation to start turning towards their next target before setting fully on their first.
Still ahead in this article:
The exact quote from Jean-Ian Filiatrault that Garand says shaped how he thinks about dropping square — and which part of the six-part series makes it most visible — comes next.
