We continue to load up on Eric Comrie Pro Reads this summer, and not just because we want to use up all his Winnipeg Jets saves before he joins the San Jose Sharks.
Sure, the fact he since signed with San Jose as a free agent expedites the need to use up all the footage he broke down while with the Jets, but it’s also never a bad idea to get more insights from a goalie who has always openly shared how he — and former playing partner Connor Hellebuyck and Winnipeg goalie coach Wade Flaherty — look at the game, both in real time and in video breakdown sessions.
THE SEQUENCE
This time Comrie breaks down a late game 6-on-5 extra attacker scenario against the Vegas Golden Knights after a turnover just inside the Winnipeg blue line:
As the puck is intercepted along the wall inside the blue line to his left, what threats must Comrie consider? Which is the most dangerous in your mind?
Is a shot dangerous from there, even on the forehand? Does the net front presence affect that? What about the down low pass option, which could create a 2-on-0 in tight? Is the unchecked player in the high slot worrisome?
Ask yourself what factors about each option matter?
Given the options, what do you think of Comrie’s positioning in the freeze frame above? Would you be taking more ice to cut off a tip from in front?
