Born in Novokuznetsk, Russia, on March 27, 1999, Daniil Tarasov was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft, 24th pick of that round. Standing 6'5" and catching left, the Russian netminder took several years to work his way into NHL action before establishing himself as a regular presence between the pipes.
Tarasov's NHL debut came in the 2021-22 season, when he appeared in four games for Columbus. In that limited audition he posted a 2.40 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage, going 0-2 in decisions. The following season, 2022-23, brought a larger workload — 17 games — but also a steeper climb, as the Blue Jackets were rebuilding and the results showed: four wins, 11 losses, a 3.91 goals-against average, and a .892 save percentage.
The 2023-24 season marked Tarasov's most complete NHL campaign to that point. Appearing in 24 games for Columbus, he went 8-11 while posting a 3.18 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage, registering his first NHL career shutout across his tenure with the organization. The 2024-25 season saw him play 20 games for the Blue Jackets, going 7-10 with a 3.54 goals-against average and a .881 save percentage, picking up one shutout on the year.
After four seasons in Columbus, Tarasov joined the Florida Panthers organization. In 2025-26 he has appeared in 33 games, going 13-15-3 with a 3.05 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage. His career NHL totals through 2025-26 stand at 98 games played, 32 wins, 49 losses, 9 overtime losses, a 3.30 goals-against average, a .897 save percentage, and 1 shutout across 5,431:32 minutes of ice time.
