Dominik Hašek was born on January 29, 1965, in Pardubice, in what was then Czechoslovakia. The Chicago Blackhawks selected him in the tenth round, 17th pick (199th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft — a selection that would take years to materialize into NHL ice time as Hašek continued developing his game in Europe.
The left-catching goaltender stood 6'1" and weighed 166 pounds. He wore number 39 throughout much of his NHL career, which spanned 735 games across stops with the Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, and Ottawa Senators. Over those 735 games, Hašek posted 389 wins, 223 losses, and 13 overtime losses, with a career goals-against average of 2.20, a save percentage of .922, and 81 shutouts.
Several details of Hašek's upbringing were captured in the Buffalo Sabres' 2026 documentary "Dominik Hašek: Always the Goalie." He grew up in Pardubice — long a hockey stronghold in what is now the Czech Republic — where he first went in goal at age six, with his father fashioning him a homemade blocker. There he also formed a lifelong friendship with future NHL defenseman Frank Musil, a fellow Pardubice native. Hašek went on to star in the Czechoslovak league for years before his NHL career took hold in the early 1990s.
