NHLFowler becomes the youngest goalie to start and win an outdoor game
At 21 years and 335 days, Jacob Fowler was already the youngest goalie to start an NHL outdoor game when he took the crease at the Heritage Classic in Winnipeg on Sunday. By the end of the night he was the youngest to win one too, stopping 33 of the Jets’ 34 shots in Montreal’s 2-1 victory and taking first star. Winnipeg pushed hardest in the third, and Isak Rosen finally beat him with 4:36 left. Fowler is the fourth rookie goalie to win an outdoor game, after Mike Condon for Montreal at the 2016 Winter Classic, Matt Murray for Pittsburgh at the 2017 Stadium Series, and Nico Daws for New Jersey at the 2024 Stadium Series. Coach Martin St. Louis kept his verdict short: “(Fowler) was tremendous.” Fowler gave the credit back to the room: “I just had a lot of belief in this group” (NHL.com).
He has won five starts in a row and is 5-1-0 with a 1.79 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage, all since Samuel Montembeault was hurt in practice on Oct. 7 and Montreal called him up from Laval. Fowler started the season in the AHL: “I think when I first got sent to Laval, I was pretty disappointed just thinking about that I wasn’t going to get a chance to play in this game” (NHL.com).

NHLPickard's first Wild win makes it five NHL franchises
Calvin Pickard stopped 15 of 17 shots as Minnesota won 4-2 in Vancouver on Sunday, a night after the Wild had beaten Seattle 5-1. It was his first win for Minnesota and the fifth NHL franchise he has won a game for, Kevin Woodley wrote for NHL.com.
By InGoal’s count from the NHL’s career stats, his 75 regular-season wins have come for Edmonton (39), Colorado (28), Philadelphia (4), Detroit (3), and now Minnesota (1); his games for Toronto and Arizona didn’t produce one. The NHL’s game notes put three active goalies ahead of him, and their career stats bear it out: Cam Talbot has won for nine franchises, James Reimer for seven, and David Rittich for six (Calgary, Toronto, Nashville, Winnipeg, Los Angeles, and the Islanders). Reimer signed with the Rangers on Sunday, as our Oct. 25 edition reported.

AHLKolosov and Commesso blank Belleville and Toronto
Aleksei Kolosov was asked for only 16 saves on Sunday, and he made every one as the Lehigh Valley Phantoms beat Belleville 2-0 for their first home win of the season. Three came on a late Senators power play, and Lehigh Valley killed all four. The Phantoms say it is his third shutout in North American pro hockey (Lehigh Valley Phantoms). Kolosov, 24, is from Minsk, Belarus. Philadelphia drafted him in the third round (78th overall) in 2021, and he came over from Dinamo Minsk of the KHL; he has played 21 NHL games for the Flyers (NHL.com).
In Toronto, Drew Commesso also turned aside all 16 shots he faced as Rockford won 3-0 (Toronto Marlies). That finished a two-game IceHogs sweep in Toronto that Stanislav Berezhnoy began on Saturday, making 34 saves on 36 shots in a 3-2 overtime win and taking first star (AHL game report). Commesso, 24, from Norwell, Mass., was Chicago’s second-round pick (46th overall) in 2020, played at Boston University, and has five NHL games with the Blackhawks (NHL.com).
Two goalies we have had on InGoal Radio were first stars on the weekend. Josh Kotai, 23, the New York Islanders prospect, stopped 33 of 34 shots on Saturday as Hamilton won 2-1 in Laval, where the Rocket outshot the Hammers 34-28 (AHL game report). On Sunday, Zach Sawchenko, 28, made 38 saves on 39 shots through overtime for the Chicago Wolves in Milwaukee, where the Admirals outshot Chicago 39-20. Milwaukee won 2-1 in the shootout, and Sawchenko was named first star (AHL game report).

CoachesBruno-Pierre Guillemette will coach Canada's goalies at the Women's Worlds
Bruno-Pierre Guillemette, the Montreal Victoire’s goaltending coach, will run Canada’s goalies at the IIHF Women’s World Championship, Nov. 6-16 in Herning and Esbjerg, Denmark. Hockey Canada named him goaltending coach on head coach Kori Cheverie’s staff when it announced the team on Oct. 19 (Hockey Canada). He will work with the three goalies our Oct. 20 edition reported: Ann-Renée Desbiens, Kayle Osborne, and Ève Gascon.

CollegeTrejbal, the 2026 draft's first goalie, earns his first NCAA win for UMass
The first goalie chosen in the 2026 NHL Draft has his first NCAA win. UMass freshman Tobias Trejbal made 26 saves on 29 shots as the Minutemen beat Stonehill 5-3 at home on Saturday (College Hockey News box score). Stonehill got within a goal late in the second period and got no closer, as Trejbal shut the door the rest of the way, including on a one-on-one chance in the third. Ethan Eskit had started the four games before, and coach Greg Carvel said Trejbal had “gotten better every day, and last week in practice, he was looking good, so he deserved to start” (Daily Collegian).
Trejbal, 18, is from Most, Czechia. Calgary took him in the second round, 42nd overall, in June, the first goalie called (USHL), after a season with the Youngstown Phantoms in which he was named the USHL’s goaltender of the year (NHL.com).

JuniorSamuel Hrenak, 18, stops 42 of 43 as Fargo wins in Sioux Falls
Samuel Hrenak, the Winnipeg Jets’ third-round pick (71st overall) in June, faced 43 shots in Sioux Falls on Sunday and let in one. The Fargo Force won 4-1, and Hrenak, 18, from Považská Bystrica, Slovakia, was the first star.
Notable performances in the OHL, QMJHL, and WHL
- OHL: Trenten Bennett, 20, stopped all 29 shots and was the first star as Flint beat the Soo Greyhounds 1-0; Jimmy Lombardi’s first-period power-play goal was all the Firebirds needed.

- WHL: Tobias Tvrznik, 19, a Colorado Avalanche fourth-round pick (126th overall) in 2026, made 43 saves on 47 shots as Wenatchee edged Kamloops 5-4 at home.

Minor hockeyWilliam Chan makes 100 saves on 110 shots in Manitoba U17 AAA
Goalie News doesn’t normally have room for minor hockey results, and we know there are a lot of amazing performances out there every weekend. But this one is verified by a box score online, and when the saves get into triple digits, it really does catch our eye.
Normally, giving up 10 goals sounds like a tough night. But William Chan of the Parkland Rangers U17 team made 100 saves on 110 shots on Sunday, playing all 60 minutes of a 10-1 loss to the Wheat Kings in Rivers, Manitoba. The shots came 31, 36 and 43 by period. Chances are a lot of those 110 were grade-A looks. Congratulations, William, on a big night in a difficult situation.

HistoryCarey Price's 100th NHL win, 15 years ago today
On this day in 2011, Carey Price made 21 saves on 22 Philadelphia shots in a 5-1 win at the Bell Centre, the 100th regular-season win of his NHL career. It came on his sixth try, after five games short of the mark, and it also snapped a six-game Montreal losing streak, with Max Pacioretty scoring twice (CBS Philadelphia). Price was 24. He retired with 361 wins, the most by a Canadiens goalie, and on Nov. 9 in Toronto he becomes the 62nd Canadiens member inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame (Canadiens.com). The NHL’s game page has the box score.
