NHLRinne will be the first Finland-born goalie in the Hall of Fame
Hall of Fame weekend opened Saturday in Toronto with the ring ceremony in the Great Hall, and Pekka Rinne counted the Finns who got there before him: Jari Kurri, Teemu Selänne and Riikka Sallinen. “And now me,” he said. “I feel humbled and so grateful.” He also named Finnish players he thinks belong on the wall, among them Miikka Kiprusoff.
Carey Price was asked who he looked up to and named Patrick Roy first. “It’s pretty cool to be able to go over to that wall over there and look at my picture,” Price said. “But there’s a lot of guys that I looked up to in here” (NHL.com).
Kurri, Selänne and Sallinen were all skaters, so on Monday night Rinne becomes the first goalie born in Finland to go into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The jacket ceremony comes first, on Sunday. Price and Rinne will make it 46 goaltenders in the Hall: the Hall’s count reached 44 with the three goalies of the class of 2023, Tom Barrasso, Henrik Lundqvist and Mike Vernon, and no goalie went in in 2024 or 2025 (Hockey Hall of Fame).

NHLSamsonov, Ravensbergen, and Knowling give the Sharks three shutouts in one night
By InGoal’s count from Saturday’s box scores, three San Jose Sharks goaltending prospects each posted a shutout on the same night, in three different leagues.
In the AHL, Ilya Samsonov turned aside all 23 Bakersfield shots, and Alexandre Gasseau’s unassisted goal late in the second period gave the Barracuda a 1-0 win at Tech CU Arena. Samsonov was the first star (AHL game report). The 29-year-old, Washington’s first-round pick in 2015, has played 200 NHL games for the Capitals, Maple Leafs, and Golden Knights, and signed a one-year, two-way deal with San Jose in September after a season with HK Sochi (San Jose Sharks).
At Munn Ice Arena, Michigan State’s Joshua Ravensbergen made 25 saves to blank Boston University 5-0 (College Hockey News). San Jose took him in the first round in 2025 out of the WHL’s Prince George Cougars.
And in the OHL, Brady Knowling, 18, stopped 27 shots and was the first star as Saginaw beat Erie 5-0 (OHL game report). The Sharks drafted the Toronto native in the fourth round, 127th overall, in June.

NHLA referee offers Fowler an apple, and the Canadiens keep rolling
During a stoppage in Saturday’s game at Scotiabank Arena, referee T.J. Luxmore pulled a fake green apple out of his pocket and held it up for Jacob Fowler. There was a reason he had it. Fowler told The Athletic’s Eric Stephens and Arpon Basu that the apple was thrown at him during play in the second period. Luxmore picked it up mid-shift while the Maple Leafs were rushing up ice, kept it in his pocket, and offered it to Fowler at the next stoppage, after a save, with 8:30 left in the period and Montreal up 2-0. “It was literally thrown right at me, so I was slamming my stick pretty hard to get the ref’s attention,” Fowler said. “The last thing I wanted was something like that to mess with me. It was really weird, and hopefully it doesn’t happen again” (The Athletic).
In hockey slang an apple is an assist, and on the broadcast Chris Cuthbert and Craig Simpson laughed and pointed out that the Montreal goalie still doesn’t have one in 27 NHL games (NHL.com).
Fowler made 26 saves in a 4-2 win over the Maple Leafs that stretched Montreal’s point streak to 10 games. The 21-year-old is 8-1-1, with points in each of his last nine starts, and NHL.com’s Nicholas J. Cotsonika notes that the last rookie goalie that young to put together a run like it was Braden Holtby, for Washington in 2010-11. Toronto scored twice in 55 seconds early in the third to make it 3-2; Fowler spoke up at a TV timeout 8:08 into the period and didn’t allow another goal. “I think our group’s pretty resilient,” he said. Coach Martin St. Louis: “He looks very comfortable, confident” (NHL.com).

NHLAround the league
- Joonas Korpisalo made 25 saves in his first game for the Rangers, a 4-3 win in Seattle. New York got him from Boston on July 1, and a lower-body injury had kept him out until Saturday. Dylan Garand had played the Rangers’ last 12 games since Igor Shesterkin’s season-ending injury on Oct. 9 (NHL.com).
- Mackenzie Blackwood stopped all 27 shots, 13 of them in a scoreless first period, as Colorado beat Detroit 4-0. It was his first shutout of the season and the 18th of his career. “Whenever you can come away with zero, it’s a good feeling,” he said (NHL.com).
- Devon Levi came back from a lower-body injury that cost him seven games and made 20 saves as Edmonton beat Vancouver 4-2 at Rogers Place. “I love playing those games,” he said (NHL.com).

NHLThe Toronto Sun on how Devin Cooley learned his calm
The Toronto Sun’s Jolene Latimer has a good feature on Devin Cooley, built from conversations with his parents, his fiancée and a childhood friend. It goes from the backyard rink in Los Gatos, Calif., to the concussion with the AHL Wranglers that left him anxious and unsure of his career, and the summer he spent reading about the brain and performance psychology to find his way back. It’s worth reading because it shows the calm and the “Nothing matters” mindset weren’t something he was born with: he learned them, recently, after the hardest stretch of his career. That makes it a useful read for any goalie, or goalie parent, working through a setback (Toronto Sun).
On InGoal: Why Devin Cooley’s Viral “Nothing Matters” Mindset Actually Works for Goalies, and Devin Cooley’s Pro Reads.
AHLCarter George blanks Abbotsford for Ontario
Carter George, 20, made 29 saves and was the first star as the Ontario Reign won 3-0 in Abbotsford on Saturday. Abbotsford outshot Ontario 13-7 in the second period, and Kaden Ziemmer’s goal late in the first held up until Francesco Pinelli scored on a penalty shot in the third (AHL game report). The Thunder Bay native was the Los Angeles Kings’ second-round pick (57th overall) in 2024, and in the OHL he became the first goalie in league history to score twice; both goals are on our goalie goals page.
CollegeRobert Morris’s Charlie Schenkel stops all 42 for an NCAA shutout
Long Island outshot Robert Morris 42-15 on Saturday in East Meadow, N.Y., and didn’t score: Charlie Schenkel stopped every one of them in a 3-0 Colonials win. Ryan MacPherson scored twice for Robert Morris, the second on a third-period power play (College Hockey News).
Around the NCAA
- Harvard’s Isabelle Whynot made 30 saves in a 3-0 win at Yale (box score).
- Clarkson’s Shane Soderwall stopped all 31 RPI shots in a 4-0 win at Cheel Arena, where RPI outshot the Golden Knights (box score).
- Air Force’s Dominik Wasik made 25 saves in a 2-0 win over Army at Cadet Ice Arena (box score).
- Maine’s Kiia Lahtinen stopped 23 shots in a 3-0 win at Boston University (box score).
CollegeMichigan Tech’s Owen Bartoszkiewicz, and the stability he went looking for
College Hockey News has a good feature on Michigan Tech’s Owen Bartoszkiewicz, who has a .940 save percentage this season. It covers how two schools moved on from him, Minnesota and then Western Michigan (that call came while he stood in a train station in Florence), how a drop to the NAHL made him rethink the teammate he wanted to be, and how coach Bill Muckalt, first at Lindenwood and now at Tech, gave him a home. It’s worth reading for any young goalie who has been cut or passed over, and for their parents: it shows what he changed, not just how it turned out. And there’s a goalie detail we liked: he knits before every game to stay calm and off screens (College Hockey News).
U SPORTSDalhousie’s Carter Richardson stops 43 of 44 at StFX
Dalhousie’s Carter Richardson made 43 saves on 44 shots and was the first star as the Tigers won 4-1 at StFX on Saturday. The only goal against him came on an X-Men power play in the second period (box score).
Notable performances in U SPORTS
- Lakehead’s Carson Cherepak made 47 saves on 51 shots on Friday in a 5-4 game against Brock in Thunder Bay (box score).
InternationalAustria’s Selma Luggin stops 48 of 49 against Germany
Germany needed 49 shots to beat Selma Luggin once on Saturday in Esbjerg, and won 2-0 at the Women’s World Championship on Nina Jobst-Smith’s goal 7:34 into the second period and her empty-netter late in the third. Luggin made 48 saves; two days into Austria’s first top-division tournament, she has 90 (Austrian Ice Hockey Association). “I always want to bring a shut-out, and that goal was unlucky for me,” she said (IIHF). At the other end, Sandra Abstreiter needed 14 saves for the shutout (TSN).
In Herning, Emma-Sofie Nordstrøm followed her 55-save night against Finland with 29 saves as Denmark came back from 2-0 down to beat Japan 3-2 in a shootout, where only one Japanese shooter beat her. “I was definitely nervous before the shootout, but I reminded myself of a shootout against China,” she said (IIHF).
On InGoal: Abstreiter on InGoal Radio Episode 327 and in Pro Tips with Sandra Abstreiter. Nordstrøm’s 55 saves were in our Nov. 7 edition.
JuniorNathan Salisbury, 18, earns his first WHL shutout for Red Deer
Red Deer’s Nathan Salisbury, 18, made 36 saves, a penalty shot among them, for his first WHL shutout as the Rebels beat Prince Albert 2-0 on Saturday, the second night of a back-to-back. “The team made it pretty easy on me,” Salisbury said. Coach Brent Kisio saw it differently: “He made some great saves. They should have had a goal somewhere along the way, and I think his performance was outstanding” (rdnewsnow).
