INGOALMAG.COMMaddie Rooney
Maddie Rooney was in net for the United States when the women's national team claimed gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics — a moment that arrived while she was still in the middle of her collegiate career at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Born in Andover, Minnesota, Rooney went on to become one of the most decorated players to come out of the UMD program before moving into professional hockey.
Her time with the Bulldogs spanned four seasons from 2015 to 2020, and the statistical record she accumulated there remains the standard against which UMD goaltenders are measured. She finished as the program's all-time career saves leader with 3,449, played more games than any other goaltender in Bulldog history at 122, and logged the most minutes — 7,277:49 — of any netminder in the program. She also owns three of the top four single-season saves records in UMD history and is one of only two Bulldogs to have made more than 1,000 stops in a single season.
Her international career has run alongside those accomplishments. In addition to the 2018 Olympic gold, Rooney returned to represent the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics, where the team earned silver. She has appeared in four IIHF Women's World Championships — 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021 — playing in three of them and winning gold in 2017 and 2019, then silver in 2022. In 2018, she received the Bob Allen Women's Player of the Year Award, given annually to the outstanding American-born women's ice hockey player.
Before joining the PWHL, Rooney competed in the PWHPA, playing three games with Minnesota in the 2020–21 season and going 2-1-0, then appearing in nine games with Team adidas in 2022–23 and posting a 5-0-0 record. She now wears number 35 for the Minnesota Frost.
InGoal Magazine has covered Maddie Rooney in one podcast appearance. She joined Kevin Woodley on InGoal Radio Episode 243 [1] in February 2024.
