Maddie Rooney
Maddie Rooney was in net for the United States women's national team when they won gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics — a moment that helped define her early career. Born in Andover, Minnesota, Rooney now plays for the Minnesota Frost in the PWHL, wearing number 35.
Before turning professional, Rooney spent four seasons at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where she accumulated records that still stand in program history. She played more games (122) and more minutes than any other goaltender in Bulldogs history, and her 3,449 career saves remain the all-time program record. She is one of two Bulldogs goaltenders to have recorded more than 1,000 saves in a single season, and she holds three of the top four single-season saves marks in UMD history.
Her international career has been equally extensive. In addition to the 2018 Olympic gold, Rooney was part of the U.S. squad that earned silver at the 2022 Winter Olympics. She also appeared in four IIHF Women's World Championship tournaments — 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021 — playing in three of them and earning gold in 2017 and 2019, and silver in 2022. In 2018, she received the Bob Allen Women's Player of the Year Award, given to the outstanding American-born women's ice hockey player.
Prior to the formation of the PWHL, Rooney competed in the PWHPA, playing three games with Minnesota in the 2020-21 season and nine games with Team adidas in 2022-23, going 5-0-0 in that stretch.
