The Andover, Minnesota native has represented the U.S. at four IIHF Women's World Championships (2017, 2019, 2020, 2021), earning gold in 2017 and 2019 and silver in 2022.

Before her professional and international career, Rooney spent four seasons at the University of Minnesota Duluth, from 2015 to 2020, where she became the program's all-time career saves leader with 3,449. She holds three of the top four single-season saves records in Bulldogs history and is one of two UMD goaltenders to have recorded more than 1,000 stops in a single season. She also accumulated the most games played (122) and minutes played (7,277:49) of any netminder in the program's history. In 2018, she received the Bob Allen Women's Player of the Year Award, given to the outstanding American-born women's ice hockey player.

Rooney played with the PWHPA's Minnesota contingent during the 2020–21 season and with Team Adidas in 2022–23, going 5-0-0 in nine games played with the latter.
