Maddie Rooney
Maddie Rooney was in net for the United States women's national team when they won gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang — a defining moment for American women's hockey. Born on July 7, 1997, in Andover, Minnesota, Rooney now plays for the Minnesota Frost of the Professional Women's Hockey League, wearing number 35.
Before reaching the professional level, Rooney spent four seasons at the University of Minnesota Duluth, from 2015 to 2020. She is the Bulldogs' all-time career saves leader with 3,449 saves, and she also holds the program records for most games played (122) and most minutes played (7,277:49) by a UMD goaltender. She owns three of the top four single-season saves records in Bulldogs history and is one of only two UMD goaltenders to have recorded more than 1,000 saves in a single season.
On the international stage, Rooney has represented the United States at two Olympic Winter Games — earning gold in 2018 and silver in 2022. She also appeared in four IIHF Women's World Championships, competing in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and played in three of those tournaments, taking gold in 2017 and 2019 and silver in 2021. In 2018, she received the Bob Allen Women's Player of the Year Award, given annually to the outstanding American-born women's ice hockey player.
Rooney played with the PWHPA's Minnesota contingent during the 2020–21 season, going 2-1-0 in three games, and later joined Team adidas during the 2022–23 PWHPA season, posting a 5-0-0 record in nine appearances.
