Maddie Rooney was in net for the United States women's national team when they won the gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics — a moment that defined one of the signature chapters of her career. Born in Andover, Minnesota, Rooney currently plays for the Minnesota Frost in the PWHL, wearing number 35.

Before turning professional, Rooney spent four seasons at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where she accumulated records that still stand. She holds the program's all-time career saves record with 3,449 — one of two Bulldogs netminders to have stopped more than 1,000 shots in a single season. She also owns the most games played (122) and most minutes played (7,277:49) in UMD goaltending history, along with three of the program's top four single-season save totals.

On the international stage, Rooney has represented the United States at two Olympic Winter Games, earning gold in 2018 and silver in 2022. She has also appeared in four IIHF Women's World Championship tournaments (2017, 2019, 2020, 2021), playing in three of them and taking home gold in 2017 and 2019, and silver in 2022. In 2018, she received the Bob Allen Women's Player of the Year Award, given to the outstanding American-born women's ice hockey player.

Prior to the PWHL's formation, Rooney competed with the PWHPA, playing three games with the Minnesota contingent in the 2020-21 season and nine games with Team Adidas in 2022-23, going 5-0-0 in those appearances.
