Nicole Hensley grew up in Lakewood, Colorado, and by 2015 had been inducted into the Colorado Sportswomen of the Year Hall of Fame — a recognition that came after three consecutive Colorado Sportswoman of the Year awards from 2013 through 2015.

Hensley played collegiately at Lindenwood University, where she left as the program's all-time leader in saves (4,094), wins (30), save percentage (.921), minutes played (7,117:44), and shutouts. Over her four years there, she earned four CHA All-Conference selections, nine CHA Goalie of the Week honors, three CoSIDA Academic All-American designations, four CHA Student Athlete of the Year awards, and four selections to the CHA All-Academic team.

At the international level, Hensley has been a fixture with the U.S. Women's National Team, appearing in six IIHF Women's World Championships and returning with a combined six medals — gold in 2016, 2017, and 2023, and silver in 2021, 2022, and 2024. She has also appeared at two Winter Olympics, winning gold with Team USA in 2018 and silver in 2022. Hensley currently plays for the Minnesota Frost of the PWHL, wearing number 29.
