Matthew Hutchison is a 19-year-old goaltender from Nanaimo, BC, currently playing for the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL. The 6'3" left-handed catcher has experience in the VIJHL, BCHL and WHL.

Born October 7, 2006, Hutchison grew up and played all his minor hockey in Nanaimo. At age 15, he became the only goalie to register wins in both the BCHL and the WHL in the same season, splitting time between leagues as well as with the U18 North Island Silvertips.

That same season produced one of the more memorable storylines in Vancouver Island goaltending. At 15, Hutchison, starting for the Cowichan Capitals, faced his 20-year-old billet brother Cooper Black, now in the Florida Panthers organization, in a head-to-head BCHL game. The matchup reads more like fiction than scouting record.

The following season Hutchison and his Oceanside Generals teammates were VIJHL Champions.

In the WHL, Hutchison spent the bulk of his career with the Vancouver Giants before stops with the Moose Jaw Warriors and Regina Pats. He attended the Vancouver Canucks Development Camp in summer 2025, and now plays for the Nanaimo Clippers in the BCHL. Hutchison appears in CCM's Total Custom Goalie product campaign.

Off the ice

Outside hockey, Hutchison runs West Coast Landscaping in Nanaimo, applying the same disciplined work ethic that informs his game to property maintenance for homeowners and real estate listings across central Vancouver Island.

Disclosure: Matthew is the son of InGoal Magazine publisher David Hutchison.
