- Hockey faces a referee shortage just as serious as its widely-discussed goaltender shortage, making youth participation in officiating more important than ever.
- Try refereeing as a goaltender because the experience offers five specific developmental benefits outlined in this episode.
- Being a referee parent comes with its own unique challenges—now two full teams scrutinize your child instead of one.
- Real-world officiating experience, like Matthew Hutchison mic'd up during a U18 game for Referee Appreciation Night, demonstrates how goalies can engage with the sport beyond their own position.
- Contact parents@ingoalmag.com to share your own experiences with goalie parents who have taken on referee roles.
This week in our Parents Segment for Episode 261, presented by the Stop It Goaltending U app, we look at reasons you should encourage your child to try being a referee.
We’ve heard most recently from Kevin Woodley and his visit to the USA Hockey National Goaltending Symposium that we’re having trouble finding goaltenders and not just in the US.
Well we hear the very same thing about referees.
People often say being a goalie parent is as hard a role as any in sports parenting. Well it’s not a picnic being a referee parent either because now you have TWO teams all over your kid. Still, this week we want to encourage all goalies to try being a referee.
Why? Listen in for the top five reasons this week (plus a bonus why it’s good for goalie parents too).
Our own Matthew Hutchison is mentioned in this episode – his team had him mic’d up as he officiated a U18 game as part of preparing for a Referee Appreciation Night the held.
