Samuel Montembeault was born October 30, 1996, in Bécancour, Quebec, and was selected by the Florida Panthers in the third round, 77th overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft. The 6'3", 218-pound left-catching goaltender spent four seasons playing major junior hockey with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada before beginning his path to the NHL.
Montembeault made his NHL debut with Florida, appearing in 11 games during the 2018-19 season and posting a 4-3 record with a 3.04 GAA and a .894 save percentage. He returned to the Panthers the following season, playing 14 games in 2019-20 with a 5-5 record, a 3.34 GAA, and a .890 save percentage. His tenure in Florida ended in October 2021, when the Panthers placed him on waivers and he was claimed by the Montreal Canadiens.
His first full season in Montreal, 2021-22, saw him appear in 38 games — at that point the most of his NHL career — going 8-18 with a 3.77 GAA and a .891 save percentage, with one shutout. As the Canadiens rebuilt around him, Montembeault's workload and results shifted season by season. In 2022-23 he played 40 games, going 16-19 with a 3.42 GAA and a .901 save percentage. The following year, 2023-24, he went 16-15 in 41 appearances with a 3.14 GAA and a .903 save percentage.
The 2024-25 season marked a career high in appearances: Montembeault played 62 games for Montreal, going 31-24 with a 2.82 GAA, a .902 save percentage, and a career-high 4 shutouts — his busiest and, by GAA, his sharpest NHL regular season to that point. Through 25 games of the 2025-26 season, he holds a 10-8-4 record with a 3.43 GAA and a .872 save percentage, all with the Canadiens.
Across 231 NHL regular-season games, Montembeault has accumulated 90 wins, 92 losses, 32 overtime losses, a career 3.23 GAA, a .896 save percentage, and 5 shutouts, logging 12,949:46 of total ice time.
On the international stage, Montembeault represented Canada's junior team in 2016. He went on to represent the Canadian senior team at the 2023 IIHF World Championship, where Canada won gold. He was selected again to represent Canada at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off, where Canada also won gold.
