New Jersey Devils goaltending legend Martin Brodeur has added a unique twist to his new mask for the upcoming season, going beyond his usual team-driven design with the addition of his two bulldogs, Stan(ley) and Vez(ina) on either side of his new lid for 2013-14.
Painted once again by artist Sylvie Poitras of Airbrush Zap, the new mask combines the vintage style so many loyal fans have long associated with the future first ballot Hall of Fame goalie, with the family dogs, who each also made an appearance in Brodeur’s EA Sports Cover Vote campaign (photos below), added to each side.
Vez appears on the right side, just above the shadow of the Vezina Trophy, with the number 4 in the middle to signify the four times Brodeur has won the award as the NHL’s top regular season goalie. Stan is opposite on the left, perched above a silhouette of the Stanley Cup, with the number 3 inside to signify Brodeur’s three championships with New Jersey.
The big, stylized “J” from the Devils logo remains on the forehead, though the curve of the matching flames on the side have changed a little, and the entire thing is done with Brodeur’s own personal MB30 logo used in various sizes as subtle shading in the background, with the intricate detail in each becoming more and more evident the closer you get to the mask.
Combine it all and Brodeur, who holds the NHL all-time records for wins (669), shutouts in the regular season (121) and playoffs (24), and single-season wins (48), has teamed up with Poitras again to produce a classic-looking lid with an added personal touch.
Poitras has included full-sized pictures from all sides below, but don’t forget to check out some of her other paint jobs for Brodeur, including some great in-action close ups of last year’s mask, which kept his personal tributes on the backplate, as well as the retro St. Patrick’s Day mask, and his 2010 Team Canada Olympic mask.
