Mac Carruth of the Portland Winterhawks was named the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season after posting a perfect four-win week with a a .967 save percentage and a goals-against-average below one.
Carruth, a Chicago Blackhawks’ prospect, stopped 89 of 92 shots while extending the club’s win streak to 12 games.
The 20-year-old Minnesota native began his impressive week with a 21-save, 5-1 win over the Red Deer Rebels on Tuesday before winning three games in three nights over the weekend. Carruth entered the third period of a tied game against the Vancouver Giants Friday, made one save and came away with the win. He then made 43 saves in a 9-1 win over U.S Division rival Spokane on Saturday, and added third star honours with 24 stops in a 3-1 win over the top-ranked Kamloops Blazers on Sunday.
Carruth is playing in his fourth WHL season with the Winterhawks after being selected in the 2010 NHL Draft by Chicago. Since returning to the Winterhawks after being a late cut in the AHL, the 6-foot-3 stopper is a perfect 9-0-0-0, with two shutouts and a league-low goals-against-average of 0.97 and league-leading save percentage of .963.
Also considered for the award this week was Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Oscar Dansk of the Erie Otters with a 2-0-0-0 record with a goals-against-average of 2.00 and save percentage of .957, and rookie Marvin Cupper of the Shawinigan Cataractes who posted a 1-1-0-0 record with a goals-against-average of 2.01 and save percentage of .941.
