Ryan Miller will have his number retired by the Buffalo Sabres next season with a resume that speaks for itself: the most NHL wins by an American goalie (387), the 2010 Vezina Trophy and a silver medal as MVP of the 2010 Olympics during his 18 seasons in the NHL.

As insightful off the ice as he was brilliant on it, and a true student of the position, Miller always seemed like the ideal Pro Reads candidate and he hasn’t disappointed, with six stellar entries into this video breakdown series already, and more great stuff below in No. 7.

THE SEQUENCE AND SAVE

This time Miller breaks down an in-zone sequence against the Washington Capitals, with his Anaheim Ducks looking to be in good shape before losing the puck along the wall. Even then, the Ducks have numbers in their own zone as the puck is sent down below the net.

This sequence is a bit harder to break down in terms of looking for information in still photos or freeze frames, so let’s just cut right to the save video and see what you think:

Key Takeaways
  • Miller breaks down his save on a behind-the-net cut vs. Washington, where his Ducks teammates overcommitted and left him in a compromised position.
  • Miller explains that dropping early left him unable to stand back up in time, so he shifted focus to regaining angle from his knees and closing distance to the shooter.
  • When a puck carrier behind the net becomes non-dangerous, Miller identifies the high shooter as the new threat and tries to take back as much ice as possible despite being grounded.
