“Vizual Edge has added a quality element to my preparation as a goaltender. I use the game day drills every game before heading to the rink. Itβs a combination of recognition, reaction and focus that activates my brain and eyes to feel ready for whatβs to come.β β Jordan Binnington

Jet Greaves is off to a record-setting start in the NHL.
Not only did Greaves post his first NHL win with 41 saves in a 5-2 victory against the St. Louis Blues on Friday β the most saves for a first win in Columbus Blue JacketsΒ history — but with 119 saves so far, he tied for the most in NHL history in his first three games in the League.
Of course, 46 of those saves came in his NHL debut last season against the Toronto Maple Leafs team he grew up cheering for in Cambridge, Ontario, and the thoughtful Greaves sat down with InGoal in the summer for an extensive video review from that memorable first game.
THE SEQUENCE
Greaves, who now has a .934 save percentage through three NHL games before being sent back to the AHL on Monday, made his Pro Reads debut on a 3-on-2 rush chance, and follows it up by breaking down a cycle chance featuring Toronto stars John Tavares and Auston Matthews:
As the puck is cycled down low to Tavares behind the net (and cutting to his left to receive it), what information are you looking for as a goalie? Where is your focus at this point? The puck isnβt on Tavares stick yet, but what do you notice about Greaves in the picture above?
With Tavares coming out the other side now, what do you think of the decision to drop across into a Reverse? Is Matthews clearly the most dangerous player above? If so, on what side?
THE SAVE
Now watch the entire save sequence below and ask yourself the same questions:
Did you identify the exact moment you know Tavares is going to make a pass? Can you see anything about the way Greaves goes into his right post that allows him to better push off it?
THE PRO READ
Now letβs hear from Greaves on what he saw on this play and how he managed it:
Still ahead in this article:
Greaves walks through exactly where his read begins on this play β and it's not when Tavares touches the puck.
