Devon Levi is back in Buffalo after a brief stint in the AHL, and back to the dominant form he showed in his first NHL stint late last season, posting a .942 save percentage in four starts for the Sabres since coming back up. Not that we needed an excuse to post more Levi Pro Reads but now seems like the perfect time to go back to him for another video session from our time in Montreal this summer with him and long-time personal coach Marco Raimondo.

THE SEQUENCE

After a couple straight breakaway breakdowns, this time Levi is facing an in-zone sequence against the New York Rangers, starting with a battle for the puck in the corner:

Looking at the freeze frame above, who is the most dangerous threat on the ice?

What factors are you looking for if and when you identify it?

Fast forward a few seconds and we’ve pretty much given away the answer to our first question with our second freeze frame, but with Adam Fox skating in alone downhill, are you now locking in on him as the biggest threat? Is there anything else that you should consider?

What are you choosing for depth as a result? What do you make of Levi’s depth above?

THE SAVE

Watch the entire play now and ask yourself the same questions?

What did you notice about Levi before that pass was made? What do you notice about his position by the time the puck reaches the stick of Fox? Does his depth decision from this point on make more sense now that you’ve watched the entire sequence?

THE PRO READ

Now let’s hear from Levi on what he saw on this play and his choices on how to play it:

Key Takeaways
  • Devon Levi breaks down his save on Adam Fox during an in-zone sequence against the New York Rangers, starting from a corner puck battle.
  • Levi used a triple shoulder check early in the sequence to identify Adam Fox as the primary threat while remaining aware of a potential backdoor play.
  • Rather than aggressively challenging Fox, Levi deliberately held back his depth because he recognized backdoor traffic that required him to stay in position to move laterally.
