- Dismissive phrases like 'I'd never let my kid play goal' reinforce stigma around goaltending, even when said in jest.
- Hockey needs goalies — discouraging children from the position hurts the game at every level.
- The strongest reason to support a child playing goal is that they want to play and deserve to be happy in their position.
- Parents can help shift the culture by articulating specific, positive reasons why goaltending is a worthwhile and rewarding role.
- InGoal invites goalie parents to share their experiences at parents@ingoalmag.com to build a community-driven resource on this topic.
How can we stop parents saying “I’d never let my son or daughter play goal”
Even when said half-jokingly it reinforces a stigma that hurts us all (not to mention the old “goalies are crazy” ).
The game needs goalies.
So today let’s begin the conversation. Let’s have listeners share their thoughts and we’ll keep this at the forefront of our conversations at InGoal going forward.
We can devote a future segment to dispelling some of the concerns – but we wanted to focus on the positive today – why do you let your son or daughter play goal?
Of course the overwhelming answer will be “because they want to play and I want them to be happy”
Perfect, of course.
But beyond that – if you were talking to a parent who is against it – what are the positives?
We share a few in today’s Parent Segment and invite you to share yours with us in the comments below or email us parents@ingoalmag.com and let us know. We want to be a part of the solution.
