Jet Greaves earned his spot as a full-time NHLer with an exceptional finish to last season and is on pace to play 50 games while proving himself No.1 worthy with the Columbus Blue Jackets this year, which gave us the opportunity to catch up with the insightful 24-year-old (he turns 25 on Monday) during a recent visit to Vancouver for a quick video session.
Greaves became a Pro Reads favourite after breaking down a memorable NHL debut against his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs two summers ago and he didn’t disappoint this time.
THE SEQUENCE
This in-zone sequence against the Nashville Predators from earlier this season has a bit of everything, but it all starts with a shot off a cross-ice dump into a sharp angle:
What information are you looking for in the freeze frame above?
With all that information processed, what do you think of Greaves choice to use an overlap?
Make a case for why an overlap is the right call — or perhaps what you would’ve done different.
As the play progresses in the offensive zone, the puck ends up back up high, with layers of traffic between Greaves and the potential shooter. Looking at the freeze frame above, identify the most dangerous threats. With that in mind, what do you make of Greaves positioning relative to the screen in front of him? If that puck is passed to his right, are you sliding or skating over?
The Save
Now ask yourself the same questions as you watch the replay:
There’s a lot happening in that clip at various points, and Greaves has been openly critical of his own decisions at times while breaking these down, so don’t be shy to have your own opinions.
“There’s a lot going on in this clip, some good, some not so good I think,” Greaves said.
Beyond the initial sharp angle shot, what did you like from Greaves, and what would you have done different on this sequence? Can you maybe identify where Greaves might say that things started to get behind for him on this play, leading to that last slide across?
