Pro-Reads: Jonathan Bernier on Shootouts

by | 1 comment

This is the first of several Pro Reads featuring Jonathan Bernier, but in a lot of ways it is more of a Pro Tips segment as the Detroit Red Wings goaltender takes us through a complete shootout against the Ottawa Senators this season, offering both specific reads about the attempts he faces, as well as tips into his overall shootout philosophy.

In fact, Bernier goes beyond shootouts, talking about how shooter tendencies compare and what factors (like ice conditions) cause them to change on a breakaway or penalty shot instead of a shootout. He talks about positional philosophy, properly timing your retreat, and even how at least one NHL player will purposely shoot for a rebound on a breakaway.
