“Vizual Edge has added a quality element to my preparation as a goaltender. I use the game day drills every game before heading to the rink. It’s a combination of recognition, reaction and focus that activates my brain and eyes to feel ready for what’s to come.” — Jordan Binnington

Carey Price returns for his seventh Pro Read, this time breaking down video of a breakaway against Detroit Red Wings forward Tyler Bertuzzi.
The Montreal Canadiens star talks about his breakaway philosophy and how it changes in a shootout, which make this Pro Reads a perfect match for the Pro Drills segment on breakaways we did this week with his new teammate Jake Allen and goalie coach Stephane Waite.
The Scenario
There’s not much to break down here: It’s a breakaway from center ice.
What do you think of Price’s positioning as Bertuzzi hit’s the hash marks?
One fairly common rule of thumb we’ve heard from goalies over the years is to try to be at the top of the crease — in the case of Price, heels out — as the shooter hits the hash marks.
The Save
As you take a look at Price retreating with Bertuzzi below, what do you notice?
Here’s a hint: If you already read and watched this week’s Pro Drills video, you should know the answer because Waite identified it as a key to managing breakaways at all levels.

- Carey Price breaks down his breakaway save on Detroit's Tyler Bertuzzi, covering his positioning, retreat mechanics, and how his approach differs in a shootout versus live play.
- Establish backwards speed early in your retreat so you can stay balanced on both edges throughout — shifting to generate more speed mid-retreat risks being caught on the wrong edge when the shooter makes his move.
- Price aims to have his heels at the top of the crease as the shooter hits the hash marks, giving him the depth and timing to manage the breakaway without over-committing.
