TRUE’s new 3D-printed goalie skate tongue is not just for custom orders: it attaches with Velcro to the TRUE goalie skates you already own, custom, stock or older models. Kevin Woodley and Jonathan “Jono” Holloway of The Hockey Shop Source for Sports break down what the lattice tongue does, what’s new this year, the one complaint they’ve heard from a pro, and the price.
- Attaches via stitched Velcro to stock, custom, and older TRUE goalie skates — no custom order required.
- The 3D-printed lattice bends forward with the ankle, offering better mobility than a traditional tongue.
- Built-in thickness at the lace-contact point provides lace-bite protection.
- Open lattice promotes airflow and faster skate drying, but allows snow intrusion — a trade-off flagged by a European pro.
- Priced at C$179.99 per pair; early glued-on Velcro versions have been replaced with stitched attachment on all models.
Jono first spotted the lattice tongue on Carolina Hurricanes goalie Pyotr Kochetkov’s Instagram, where he shows off his gear, and it does three jobs a traditional tongue doesn’t do as well.
Forward flex and ankle mobility
The 3D-printed lattice bends forward with your ankle, which gives you better ankle mobility inside the skate.
Lace-bite protection
The lattice is built thicker right where the laces press in, so the front of the ankle is protected from lace bite.
Air flow
Because the lattice is open, air moves through it, keeping your feet a little cooler and helping the skate dry out after you’re done.
New this year: stitched Velcro
The Velcro on the bottom of the tongue is now stitched in on every model. Early versions were only glued on and could peel.
Which skates it fits
In the video it goes into a stock Catalyst 7X6 straight off the wall, and it also fits the previous 7X4 and 5X4 line as well as custom TRUE goalie skates. TRUE is the only brand with the Velcro attachment, so it won’t drop into another brand’s skate.
The trade-off: snow
One pro in Europe tried it this summer and switched back, because snow was getting through the lattice into his skate. The same openness that lets air in lets snow in.
Price
The tongue is C$179.99 for the pair, as quoted on air. Questions about fitting it to your skates go to the goalie experts at The Hockey Shop Source for Sports at 1-800-567-7790, goalie@thehockeyshop.com, or @THSgoal on social.
