In the first of a new series we welcome Brandon Thibeau, founder of the IQ Goalie newsletter who will be contributing to InGoal on the Science of Goaltending. This introductory article looks at Evidence Based Goaltending including an examination of the "Quiet Eye" and its application to goaltending.
In the second of our ProDrills articles with Kings goalie development coach Matt Millar, this week we look at a drill with goaltender Matt Villalta that includes three types of traffic and also includes net play mechanics, making good reads off the release, as well as some skill work for the forwards.
With the Stanley Cup Playoffs fully underway, we were reminded that we still have a couple of ProReads left to unveil with Braden Holtby, one of three Cup winners we’ve featured. Holtby may have retired from the NHL ahead of this season but it would be silly to waste any insights from our lengthy in-person video session during the Vezina Trophy-winner.
This week Holtby is facing a potential 2-on-0 against the Columbus Blue Jackets this time, with Patrik Laine cutting in on more of an angle.
🎤 Episode 213 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, features Collin Delia and a great conversation about his first season with the Vancouver Canucks.
In the feature interview, presented by Sense Arena, Delia talks about changing teams for the first time in his pro career after five seasons in the Chicago Blackhawks organization, embracing new philosophies under Canucks goaltending coach Ian Clark and development coach Marko Torenius, and having a firm game plan, or system, for the first time. Delia shares details of that plan and the toughest part of integrating it into games, his keys to using a multi-stance system without getting caught in the transition down to a save stance, the importance oof purposeful practice, why he tries to "err to big," and the role Patrick Roy played in having "Be A Warrior" stitched into his Brian's equipment.
All that, plus a trip to The Hockey Shop Source for Sports for some more great savings and a philosophical discussion on pad flex in which we ask whether everyone is measuring it wrong?
