Jets Netminder wins Second Vezina Trophy as NHL’s Best Goalie
Connor Hellebuyck won the 2024 Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goalie for a second time on Thursday, beating second place finisher Thatcher Demko by a wide margin with 31 of 32 first-place votes, something predicted in our annual statistical breakdown. Hellebuyck also won the award in 2020, which made this the perfect time to look back at all the times the Winnipeg Jets No.1 goalie – and the coaches he works with, on and off the ice — has shared insights and advice at InGoal Magazine.
Since it’s the offseason, it feels especially fitting to start with the off-ice work featuring Hellebuyck and his long-time trainer Adam Francilia. The duo has worked together since 2017 and in 2020 shared a six-part training sequence designed to eliminate counter-rotation, a common error that causes unnecessary delays in goalie movements, by strengthening and re-patterning neuromuscular firing patterns with this series:
On the ice, Hellebuyck has been equally open in sharing tips and insights into his work with long-time Jets goalie coach Wade Flaherty and playing partner Laurent Brossoit.
This includes a progression of 2-on-1 drills to prevent him from feeling “stuck:”
There was a similar-themed drill from another season that led to a game-saving stop:
There was also a great warm-up drill Hellebuyck and Brossoit learned at the NET360 camp in Kelowna with goalie coach James Jensen of the WHL Everett Silvertips:
Lastly, but certainly not least, Hellebuyck joined the InGoal Radio Podcast after he won his first Vezina Trophy in 2020, and while it’s been four years and we’ve talked and written a lot of articles since, there are still plenty of great stories and takeaways he shared that day:
