NHLGreaves and Garand trade zeroes for 60 minutes before Columbus wins in overtime

Nobody scored on Jet Greaves or Dylan Garand through three periods in Columbus on Saturday. Greaves finished with 29 saves and the shutout when Kent Johnson one-timed a Zach Werenski pass at 3:26 of overtime for a 1-0 Blue Jackets win; Garand stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced over 63 minutes (NHL game center). It was Greaves’ first shutout this season and the fifth of his NHL career, in his 77th start (NHL.com).

Greaves said a game like that turns into a staring contest between the creases, with the two goalies looking “at one another 200 feet away and wonder who’s going to blink first.” He added: “It’s fun to be in games like that” (NHL.com). Garand gave the credit to his defence: “Our D-corps is so good,” he said, adding that their box-outs had been “making my job easy” (BlueJackets.com). He has earned at least a point in four of his five starts (3-1-1), and his .927 save percentage is tied for fifth among NHL goalies with five or more starts (NYRangers.com).

NHLOettinger has three shutouts in his first six starts

Jake Oettinger needed 19 saves for his third shutout of the season as Dallas won 4-0 in Chicago on Saturday. No other NHL goalie has more than one (NHL.com stats). Through six starts he is 3-2-1 with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .952 save percentage, and he has 19 shutouts in his career (NHL.com).

Oettinger spread the credit around: “Guys have played really well, committed to playing good defense, and that’s what happens,” and he admitted to some help from the iron, “a couple of posts tonight” (NHL.com). Coach Glen Gulutzan pointed to an early breakaway stop and to something bigger: “He’s carrying himself a little different, so he’s on the right path,” he told the Stars’ Mike Heika (DallasStars.com).

NHLDustin Wolf will wear Kiprusoff tribute gear for the Flames' '04 night

Dustin Wolf has a throwback set ready for Calgary’s ’04 Run Celebration, which marks the Flames’ trip to the 2004 Stanley Cup Final, and it is expected to make its game debut on Oct. 24 against Detroit. The mask copies the black, skull-covered design Miikka Kiprusoff wore that spring; Kiprusoff and Todd Miska, the Minnesota artist who designed and painted his masks, both gave the replica their approval before it was made (Penticton Western News). The white CCM pads carry diagonal streaks and a vintage CCM logo, and they are stitched rather than printed (CalgaryFlames.com).

Wolf was three in 2004. “He’s such a big presence in the city, and obviously, his number’s hanging from the rafters,” he said of Kiprusoff, and of the pads: “Normally they’re able to print it, but they were actually able to stitch everything on, which was nice” (CalgaryFlames.com). The Flames will wear the red ’04 kits again after the holiday break against Vancouver, San Jose, and Tampa Bay.

AHLTrey Augustine earns his first pro win, Kevin Mandolese blanks Utica in his Laval debut

Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine got his first professional win on Saturday, 27 saves on 29 shots in the Grand Rapids Griffins’ 4-2 win over the IceHogs in Rockford. Rockford scored twice in the third to make it 3-2, then pulled its goalie for a six-on-four. With 1:46 left Augustine pushed across to his right post and got his left pad on a Nick Lardis one-timer, and he stopped Lardis again from the left circle with 30 seconds to go before Grand Rapids sealed it with an empty-netter (Grand Rapids Griffins).

Augustine, 21, from South Lyon, Mich., was Detroit’s second-round pick (41st overall) in 2023 (NHL.com) and turned pro this fall after his college career at Michigan State. He is 1-1-1 in his first three AHL games (Grand Rapids Griffins).

In Utica, Kevin Mandolese made 25 saves for a shutout in his first game with the Laval Rocket, a 4-0 win over the Comets, and was the first star (AHL game report). Mandolese, 26, from Blainville, Que., signed a one-year deal with Laval on July 1; last season he won both of his AHL starts, one for Syracuse and one for Charlotte (Laval Rocket).

ECHLVernon blanks Savannah in his first Norfolk start

Matt Vernon opened the ECHL season with a 33-save shutout as the Norfolk Admirals won 3-0 in Savannah on Friday, his first start for the club. The Ghost Pirates outshot Norfolk 15-6 in the first period, and Vernon stopped all 15 (Norfolk Admirals). He is the son of former Flames goaltender Mike Vernon, who won the Stanley Cup with Calgary in 1989 and with Detroit in 1997 (Jacksonville Icemen, The Hockey News). The former Colorado College goalie spent last season with Innsbruck in Austria’s ICEHL; before that he had two seasons with the Jacksonville Icemen, where he made the ECHL All-Rookie Team and the All-ECHL Second Team and was the league’s goaltender of the month in February 2024 (Norfolk Admirals).

CollegeUrban's career-high 42 saves finish Arizona State's sweep at UMass Lowell

Arizona State sophomore Samuel Urban turned away 42 of 44 shots on Saturday as the Sun Devils won 4-2 at the Tsongas Center and swept the weekend in Lowell, the program’s first road sweep since early 2025. He made 16 saves in each of the first two periods, the first 16 of them protecting a 1-0 lead, and his previous best was 40 against North Dakota last January. “I thought Urbs did that this weekend, and for sure at times tonight, he was really important,” coach Dave Hakstol said, after praising his goalie’s battle level (Sun Devil Athletics).

CollegeTwo Saint Anselm goalies make 76 saves on back-to-back nights, Ridderstolpe stops 109 at Penn State

For the second night in a row, a Saint Anselm goalie made 76 saves, and it was a different goalie each time. Sophomore Emma Brewer, in her first game for the Hawks, stopped 76 of 82 shots in a 6-2 loss at Assumption on Saturday, matching the program record that freshman Kalyssa Bayne set in her own debut against the Greyhounds on Friday (in yesterday’s edition). That is 152 saves in two nights from two goalies new to the team, an amazing weekend for the duo (Saint Anselm Athletics, College Hockey News, College Hockey News).

Penn State swept Lindenwood this weekend, but the Lions’ freshman goalie Ebba Ridderstolpe, from Botkyrka, Sweden, faced 116 shots in the two games and stopped 109 of them. She made 46 saves in a 5-4 loss on Friday, then a career-high 63 on 65 shots in a 3-0 loss on Saturday, when Penn State’s third goal went into an empty net (College Hockey News, College Hockey News, Lindenwood Athletics). Saturday was her fifth start in a row (hat tip to Giants in the Crease on X, who flagged her weekend). At the other end on Saturday, Penn State first-year Morgan Stickney needed 18 saves for her first college shutout (Penn State Athletics).

One night after she became Minnesota Duluth’s career shutout leader, Ève Gascon added to the record with 18 saves in a 5-0 win at Bemidji State, her 25th career shutout. She has four in five starts this season, the most of any NCAA goalie, with a 0.40 goals-against average and a .982 save percentage (UMD Athletics, UMD stats).

At Cornell, senior Annelies Bergmann stopped all 27 Vermont shots in a 1-0 win on Saturday. It was her 22nd career shutout, which ties Amanda Mazzotta (2008-11) for the most in Cornell history (Cornell Athletics, College Hockey News). LIU freshman Victoria Rutnik also made 27 saves for a shutout, in a 2-0 win over Sacred Heart (LIU Athletics).

InternationalNormann stops four in a shootout for Frölunda

In Sweden’s SHL, Frölunda HC goalie Tobias Normann turned away four shootout attempts on Saturday to beat Skellefteå AIK at home, after the teams finished overtime tied 2-2; Filip Cederqvist scored the winner. “I like shootouts,” he told SVT Sport afterward (SVT Sport).

JuniorDylan Mingo, 16, makes 61 saves for Moose Jaw

Saskatoon outshot Moose Jaw 64-23 on Saturday and won 3-2 on a power-play goal with 2:37 left, but 16-year-old Warriors goalie Dylan Mingo made 61 saves, 24 of them in the second period, and was named a star of the game (WHL game report, Moose Jaw Warriors). Earlier in the week Hockey Canada named him to Canada White for the U17 World Challenge, Nov. 1-7 in Oakville, Ont. (The Hockey News, TSN).

HistoryEd Belfour's NHL debut and first shutout, both on Oct. 18

On this day in 1988, a 23-year-old the Chicago Blackhawks had signed as a free agent made his NHL debut in Detroit. Ed Belfour faced 49 shots and stopped 45, and the Red Wings needed overtime to win 4-3 (NHL.com, Hockey-Reference).

Two years later to the day, he got his first NHL shutout: 20 saves in a 3-0 Blackhawks win at home over Toronto, while Peter Ing made 46 saves for the Leafs (NHL.com, Hockey-Reference). That 1990-91 season, his first full one, he won 43 games and the Calder, Vezina, and Jennings trophies. He is one of four goalies to win the Calder and the Vezina in the same season, with Frank Brimsek, Tony Esposito, and Tom Barrasso, and the only one to add the Jennings (Calder winners, Vezina winners). He won the Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999, finished with 484 regular-season wins, and went into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011 (Hockey Hall of Fame).

A note on yesterday’s history: Our Oct. 17 edition first went out without the day’s biggest anniversary, Patrick Roy passing Terry Sawchuk for the most wins in NHL history on Oct. 17, 2000. We added it later in the day, and it now leads that edition’s History section. We missed it because our history notes come from the NHL’s current stats, and the league has since revised Sawchuk’s career total from 447 wins to 445. By today’s numbers, Roy passed him on Oct. 12, 2000, five days before the night everyone celebrated his 448th (CBC, NHL.com). Hat tip to Mike Commito, whose post on X flagged the anniversary.
