NHLAnnunen waited 82 games for a shootout, then nobody beat him
For 82 NHL games, Justus Annunen never had to face a shootout. His first came on Saturday, and Tampa Bay went 0-for-4 against him. The Predators goalie turned away Pontus Holmberg, Brayden Point, Jake Guentzel, and Gage Goncalves, and Steven Stamkos scored the only goal of the four rounds to beat his old team 5-4. Annunen had 22 saves before the shootout (NHL.com). “It just took what, [Annunen] 83 starts to get into a shootout?” Stamkos joked. By the NHL’s stats it was 83 games and 70 starts. It was also Nashville’s first win past regulation in six tries this season (Predators).
Max Herz flagged the streak a week ago in a post built on figures from NHL Stats: since the shootout arrived in 2005, nobody had played more games without taking part in one. It wasn’t close. By InGoal’s count from the NHL’s stats, the most games by any goalie since 2005-06 with no shootout are now 35, shared by Mike McKenna and Jon Gillies. Among the 72 goalies who have played in the NHL this season, Clay Stevenson now has the longest wait at nine games, one ahead of Michael DiPietro. At the other end, Henrik Lundqvist played the most shootouts, 111.

NHLJarry blanks the Islanders for his second straight shutout
Two starts, two 4-0 wins. Tristan Jarry stopped all 18 Islanders shots on Saturday, three days after his 24-save shutout of Calgary, which was in our Oct. 29 edition. He is the fourth Oilers goalie in 20 years to do it back to back, and the first since Mike Smith in 2021-22. Coach Mike Babcock pointed to Jarry’s off-season: “He got to work all summer and he’s done a good job with (goaltending coach) Pete (Aubry),” he said. “That’s real good for the Oilers, but it’s real good for him and his family, so I’m happy for him” (NHL.com). The shutout was the 25th of his career, level with Grant Fuhr and Mike Liut (The Hockey News, via Yahoo Sports).
By InGoal’s count from the NHL’s game data, it was only the second time an Edmonton goalie has shut out the Islanders on the road, playoffs included. The first was Fuhr’s 34-save, 1-0 win in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on May 10, 1984.
Matt Tomkins, who hasn’t played an NHL game this season, is expected to start Sunday against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, The Hockey News reports.

Heading into the game, NHL EDGE had him first in the league at stopping mid-range shots (.982) and second in overall save percentage at .942 (NHL.com).

CollegeJack Spicer's 42 saves beat No. 15 Cornell in his first NCAA start, Cataldo gives Army back-to-back shutouts
In two-plus seasons at Sacred Heart, Jack Spicer had two relief appearances to his name. The junior from Rockville, Maryland, finally got a start on Saturday, at Lynah Rink against a ranked team, and he stopped 42 of 44 shots in a 3-2 win (Atlantic Hockey America). It was his first college win. Cornell didn’t score on any of its last 20 shots, and 13 of his 16 second-period saves came with the Big Red on the power play (Cornell).
At Tate Rink, junior JJ Cataldo stopped all 27 RIT shots in a 3-0 win, a night after a 23-save shutout of the same team. Army hadn’t posted shutouts in consecutive games since October 2016, and at 4-0-0 in the league it has never started conference play so well. Cataldo’s eighth career shutout is the most by any active NCAA goalie (Atlantic Hockey America).

HistoryJacques Plante puts on his mask, 67 years ago today
On this day in 1959, an Andy Bathgate backhand opened up Jacques Plante‘s nose at Madison Square Garden. He needed seven stitches, and while he was being treated he told Montreal coach Toe Blake that he wouldn’t go back out without his mask. Blake’s only other option was the Rangers’ house goalie, Arnee Nocks. “OK. Do it,” he said. The Canadiens won 3-1, and Plante stayed in the mask for an 11-game unbeaten run (NHL.com).
Clint Benedict had tried one in 1930, but Plante was the first NHL goalie to wear one regularly (The Canadian Encyclopedia). He took it off once more, under pressure from Blake, for a 3-0 loss in Toronto on March 8, 1960, and never played without it again (CBS Sports).
That night is why Nov. 1 is the International Day of the Goaltender, or Goalie Day as we call it. This is the 10th annual. Our Goalie Day feature: John Snesar, still in goal at 93.
